Mike Kelly has done it again with another of his fact-filled books about trout fishing in New York State. This time he covers the western part of the state with "Trout Streams of Western New York". When fishermen think of fishing the western part of the state, their thoughts usually go to the big fish-rich waters of lakes Erie and Ontario. Erie is noted for lunker black bass, walleye and perch while in Ontario, the Chinook salmon is king along with lakers and brown trout. With this offering, Mike has placed the spotlight on some truly fine stream angling for inland trout. Largely ignored, there are numerous prime waterways scattered all across the region. Mike doesn't just write about them, but he also fished them so he can speak with authority about these hidden and largely forgotten gems. This award winning writer visits each county and breaks down the fishing holes in each and a most helpful map is also provided. The back part of the book provides a wealth of knowledge about trout covering a variety of subject,such as "Wild Trout vs. Hatchery Trout" and "Becoming a Nymphing Ninja" to mention a few. My favorite chapter is "The Aging Angler"! This book belongs on every anglers bookshelf and contains a wealth of information for anyone wishing to broaden their trout fishing horizons.

But there are exceptions, and here is one of them. “Trout Streams Of Western New York”, written by J. Michael Kelly, is an absolutely essential reference for anyone who enjoys trout fishing in any notable stream in DEC’s Region 9 area to our west.
What I like most about this tome is the clear and specific directions the author gives to more than 50 stream locations in six counties and Allegany State Park. I have fished six of those streams with fly rod in hand, and I can attest that this author knows his stuff. That he has been able to detail all of the notable streams is, to me, mind boggling.
But this book is not only for fly fishermen. People using the right spinning gear (I happen to also like ultra-light spinning rods, light lines, and tiny reels for stream fishing) can take their share of fish, too. Every area limited to fly fishing only (there are only a few of them) are clearly located in his stream descriptions.
This is a really good book for visitors and locals alike. Kelly has done a great job that any angler can take advantage of.
