Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This book is part of the "Super Bowl Superstars" series focused primarily on football players who are not only great in their positions but are also humanitarians in some way off the field. In this case, the focus is on Troy Polamalu, a safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and his work on the field as well as his work with kids who have special needs or are dealing with serious illnesses. The book contains nine chapters that focus on Polamalu's childhood and early football career, his on-going standing as one of the Steelers great defensive players and finally, Polamalu's work with the Pittsburgh Children's Hospital and his own charity, the Harry Panos Fund which helps families of soldiers injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. Text boxes throughout the book highlight information about Polamalu and the groups for which he provides some type of support. Photographs of Polamalu in action as well as those when he is with family or with people for whom he advocates add to the text and will certainly motivate readers to pick up the book. As with the rest of this series, the book has a well-developed glossary, bibliography, and "Read More" section. It also includes access to a website about Polamalu and the Steelers that provides more information for younger fans. This text, and the series in general, provides football fans with a quick and interesting look at one of their favorite players in a book that they should be able to easily read and understand.
