Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Animals take to the road, sea and sky in Truck Duck, the latest vehicular volume (My Race Car; My Fire Engine) by Michael Rex. Animals take their favorite modes of transport-namely, those that rhyme with their own names. The slightly menacing Cab Crab and notably confident Tug Bug are priceless. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Transport vehicles are linked with an improbable cast of drivers. The pairs rhyme (truck/duck, two/crow, etc.) and there is plenty of humor in the illustrations. The cover offers a clue as to the content. A duck is depicted driving a very large truck. The author and illustrator also gives us a crab driving a yellow city cab, a brown and white cow with a spring of hay jauntily sticky from its mouth ably steering a plow, and a tiny ladybug is piloting a very large tug. And so it goes with plenty of other vehicles and their unusual drivers. For kids who love looking at vehicles, the pictures are realistic enough that they can enjoy the details and the drivers silly enough to bring smiles (jeep sheep, ho frog, caboose moose). It is fun for all in a book with sturdy pages that should hold up well during repeated readings. 2004, GP Putnam's Sons, Ages 1 to 3.

School Library Journal
PreS-Rex's bright, engaging style suits this simple concept book. Each spread shows an animal in some form of transportation, from the clever ("Rig Pig" and "Blimp Chimp") to the less obvious (a "Hog Frog" is a green frog on a Harley-Davidson). The straightforward pictures are clear and detailed, showing the clean lines of a taxi ("Cab Crab") and even the gearshift on the tractor ("Plow Cow"). The animals have a serious yet comic look, confidently enjoying themselves on all these wonderful machines. The very brief text lends itself to rhyming wordplay, an important skill for preschool learners. Bruce McMillan's Play Day: A Book of Terse Verse (Holiday, 1991; o.p.) set the standard for books with short rhyming phrases. This is a worthy addition to the genre, and will please the little guys and gals who love things that roll, float, and fly.-Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
On the ground, in the water, or through the air, here comes a parade of spread-filling trucks, boats, and other vehicles, each piloted by a smiling animal. The titular duck drives a dump truck, a "cab crab" waves from the window of a yellow taxi, a "blimp chimp" steers a purple airship, and other creatures ride on or in a tow truck, a motorcycle, a submarine, and more. Rex colors each machine in glowing primaries, suspends them against bright monochrome backgrounds, and adds just enough detail to tempt young viewers to linger lovingly. Printed on stiff paper, these mighty machines will rivet fans of all things big, noisy, and on the go. (Picture book. 3-5)
