Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cherie Ilg Haas
It is seemingly universal that children are fascinated with trucks, which is possibly why the concept of this book seems to be great nursery rhymes that are all about different types of trucks. But it is hard to compete with the classics, such as taking "Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater" and translating it to "Peter Peter Payload Eater." The result is that the younger readers this is intended for will likely not be able to really follow the meanings of the rhymes, which feel a little forced when read out loud in particular. Twenty-two rhymes are included, such as "Wrecker Rosie Sat on a Wall," "Pop! Blows the Diesel," and "That's What Trucks Are Made Of." On a positive note, the artwork truly steals the show. Each truck character has its own personality and unique expression. It is full of vibrant colors and creative scenery and yet has enough white space to balance the energetic goings-on of the trucks themselves. Reviewer: Cherie Ilg Haas

PreS-Gr 3—This collection of lively truck-themed "Mother Goose" rhymes is filled with humor, although not all of them are equally nimble for reading aloud. Replacing the familiar lines for "Little Miss Muffet" are the words: "Little Dan Dumper sat on his bumper,/Taking his break for the day./Along came Pete Loader,/who revved his loud motor,/And frightened Dan Dumper away." The words for "Three Blind Mice" change to: "Three LOUD trucks./Three LOUD trucks./See how they ZOOM./See how they ZOOM./They all jumped over/the muck and goo./They skidded and screeched/and their mufflers blew./Did you ever see/such a crazy crew?/As three LOUD trucks./Three LOUD trucks." Fresh noisy lyrics for "The Wheels on the Bus" are great for singing exuberantly in storytime, "The siren on the truck goes whoop, whoop, whoop…." The digital illustrations are colorful, energetic, and playful: the vehicles have personality plus. One flashy spread shows all of them and their sound words from "The Wheels on the Truck," and another picture shows the ice-cream truck parked on a moon made of ice cream. This effervescent picture book will zoom off your shelves.—Kirsten Cutler, Sonoma County Library, CA

This book was recommended to my by a friend whose grandson loves this book. I purchased it for my two year old grandson and he takes it with him everywhere. It immediately became his favorite book out of his large collection!!! Fun for parents to read to him, too.

I read Truckery Rhymes to my Kindergarten classes. They sang, echo read, retold original nursery rhymes. We loved the pictures. I would highly recommend this book for all school and public libraries. It makes a great gift also.

This is a great book. My son is four and he loves it! As a parent, it's really fun to read, too. It is not a story, but a collection of nursery rhymes transformed by trucks/cars/ anything with wheels! For example, rather than "Humpty Dumpty Sat on a Wall" the rhyme is "Wrecker Rosie Sat on a Wall". Sample line from another rhyme: Rumble, rumble Monster Max. Can you jump those junkyard stacks? They are simply fun stories to share and get a giggle out of. The characters are the same as in other Scieszka Trucktown books and that's a good thing. Fun, silly, rhyming, alliterative: great for everyone!
