What a bonanza, ten mini pictures books about machines that should delight any young child. They have all been previously published and some of the comments from Children's Literature reviewers about these books are reprised in this review. Busy Boats offers an opportunity to learn about the various types of boats that ply the seas, rivers, and lakes. From something as simple as a dinghy or rowboat, to great ocean liners, Mitton and Parker introduce boats and boating. The fire alarm sounds and the firemen, (an assortment of anthropomorphic animals), put on their yellow gear and jump into the fire truck in Flashing Fire Engines. They roar to the scene with sirens howling and, once there, put out the flames and rescue an occupant of the enflamed building. The rhyming text will appeal to young listeners and the bright, amusing illustrations are filled with things to discuss. Amazing Airplanes describes events from the arrival at the airport to unloading from the plane; the reader will find easy-to-read text with cute illustrations that allow the detail to be explained in an easy-to-understand format. Tremendous Tractors and Tough Trucks feature Rabbit, Bird, and Mouse who strut their stuff on the farm using the plow, the harrow, the roller, the seed drill, the mower, and the bailer as well as driving heavy eighteen-wheeler rigs—not to mention garbage trucks, dump trucks, tankers (carrying milk, of course), and tow trucks for when the others break down. Terrific Trains presents clever, rhyming text, and bold, cartoon-like illustrations that enliven this book, which describes various kinds of trains and related accessories. Richard Scary-typeanimals add interest to the action-packed descriptions of various kinds of trains in motion. Dazzling Diggers will satisfy any child who is fascinated by large trucks and machinery. A variety of "diggers" are vibrantly illustrated scooping, crashing, digging, and building. Meet the Author

Tony Mitton

Tony Mitton is a widely anthologized children's poet, as well as a teacher and performing poet. His Royal Raps won the 1997 Nottinghamshire Libraries/Dillons Children's Book Award. His recent collection of poetry, Plum, won the Publishers Weekly 2003 Cuffies Award for Best Book of Poetry. Tony teamed with illustrator Ant Parker on several books, including Dazzling Diggers, Roaring Rockets, and Terrific Trains. Ant Parker studied drawing and printing at the Bath Academy of Art in England and has taught papermaking, printing and bookbinding workshops for children. Toddlers and parents around the globe have discovered the irresistible appeal of his wacky cartoon characters in Flashing Fire Engines, Terrific Trains, Dazzling Diggers, and Roaring Rockets. Other titles include Charlie the Chicken and Desmond the Dog.
