Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This is a book without a story, but there are words everywhere. They appear on round colored circles on every page: Big Truck, Little Truck; Fast Truck, Slow Truck; and on signs such as SPEED LIMIT 35 and CAUTION LOW CEILING. There are six double-page spreads filled with color and action. As trucks pop up on roads, bridges, construction sites or at the recycling center, a little truck may run along a side road or a fire engine ladder may rise up the side of a building. There are so many things to see and talk about together. Each page has a different scene packed with action in vivid colors. The book also comes with an 18-by-44-inch poster with a map of the town illustrated in the book and, on the other side, a list of things to look for in the pictures such as trash cans or a pet alligator. I'm not really a truck person unless the truck is older than I am and has fat fenders.  I am, however, a big fan of really well-done pop-up books.  My little boy is a four-year-old boy and is a fan of anything that can go fast and make a lot of noise, and he was so enamored with Pets Go Pop! by Bob Staake, that it just made sense to buy Trucks Go Pop! as well.
Like Pets Go Pop!, the text is simple.  That is not a criticism.  The great thing about simple text is that after I read a book to my son two or three times, he can "read" it himself.  He is both learning to read and learning to love to read.
The star of this book is the amazing artwork and the mind-boggling paper engineering.  Two dimensional Bob Staake illustrations are pretty incredible.  Throw in that third dimension and you have something that is in-your-face brilliant.
