As the subtitle notes—if you want to learn about the ins and outs of monster trucks, semis, pickups and other trucks, Young offers a good place to start. The opening lets readers know how important trucks are to our lives—they transport the food we eat, remove the garbage created and are vital to emergency services like firefighting. A single spread offers a timeline of the trucking industry form the 1895 construction of the first truck in Germany to a statement that in 2006 there were almost three million truck driver jobs in the United States. What follows is an analysis of the components of various trucks—semi-trucks which we see on the highways (big rigs). Also in the big truck category are those that are more open such as logging trucks which have a flatbed to hold the load. Tankers are another type of large truck and they can carry loads as varied as milk and gasoline. Young then moves to sports with an introduction of monster trucks and recaps a bit of history and the role of these trucks as part of sports entertainment. He then moves back to discuss pickup trucks which were initially used by farmers and construction workers who needed them to haul tools and supplies. The photographs give a good look at how these trucks have evolved into today's modern pickup. The closing section introduces a variety of vehicles from service trucks (fire engines, dump truck, tow trucks), to military vehicles. The book ends with a glossary, reasonably recent titles to read, Internet sites and an index. Part of the "Velocity" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

Gr 4-6–Filled with a multitude of colorful photos and a few vintage black-and-white ones, these books’ appearance borders on busy, but the content more than compensates for that. Providing several subtopics within six or seven chapters, each title presents history, famous figures, and other information in an intelligent, factual manner. Parts of the texts are in paragraph format, and the rest comes in the form of boxed captions. Safety is stressed when racing is involved. There are some minor content problems. Custom Cars, which has excellent commentary about the dangers of street racing, includes a photo of a 2007 Camaro. This would have been a concept car, as 2003 was the last model year for the Camaro until 2009 when Chevy released the 2010 model. Trucks states that Ford released its Model T Runabout in 1925. This is correct, but readers will likely assume that this was the first pickup truck, whereas the book later states that Chevrolet released its first pickup in 1918. Even with the aforementioned errors, this series is the best to come along in some time.
