Overview

April 2003. American troops advance on Baghdad.

Two NYPD detectives, each marked by the attacks on the World Trade Center, search for a suspect who may be planning the next terrorist attack. On their first night together they make a bizarre discovery-a carefully stuffed human cadaver skin. Who did it? Why? What does it mean? As contemporary as the news from Iraq, True Detective is a profound meditation on truth, faith and meaning in the Age of Terror.

Advance praise for True Detective:

"...True Detective is a true delight. Though Marlowe, the NYPD narrator, claims his name refers to the Elizabethan playwright and sounds more like Chandler's master of the mean streets, he is in truth Conrad's Marlow, journeying into the heart of the darkness spreading from 9/11... a genre-bending thriller, a mystery, a love story, a literary pastiche filled with tricks and tropes, literary allusions and literal illusions, a parable on current events, a metaphysical novel in wolf's clothing...[but] always a straight-ahead, fast-paced police procedural...all this combines to make the title resonate, for the true detective must solve the only true crime." - Bink's Books', V18, No. 4

"Provocative...wraps you up in its twists and turns...full of surprises...a great read." - B. OKeeffe, Scottsdale

"Hitchcock would have loved it!" - S. Thomasson, Detroit

If you enjoy psychological thrillers, unusual love stories, or simply appreciate the city that is New York, I urge you to read this novel. Mr. Huebner's writing is cinematic and he has a good ear for dialogue as well. Truly a thinking man's 'or woman's' page turner.

Jim Huebner's True Detective is a true delight. Though Marlowe, the NYPD-detective narrator, claims his name refers to the Elizabethan playwright, he sounds more like Chandler's master of the mean streets and mordant similes and he is in truth Conrad's Marlowe, journeying into the heart of the darkness spreading from the morning of 9/11. Though it is filled with tricks and tropes, literary allusions and literal illusions, it is first and foremost a straight-ahead, fast-paced police procedural, starting with the discovery of a dead body 'or is it?' at the Battery and ending with a shootout on the steps of St. Patrick's. But it is much more than that. It is a genre-blending, genre-bending thriller, a mystery, a love story, a literary pastiche, a parable on current events, a metaphysical novel in wolf's clothingâ¿¿all these aspects work together well, and combine to make the title resonate more strongly, for the true detective must solve the only true crime.

This novel examines the current, dangerous political atmosphere of post 9/11 America through the surprisingly clear lense of its two (anti) heroes. The setting is perfect, described with an unsettling and provocative tone. The narrative moves quickly, with compelling and natural dialogue. Plenty of surprises and twists for the crime buff, with a frighteningly real political background. A very gripping read, satisfying throughout, and reaching conclusions which should not be overlooked.

I'm always looking for new crime/detective stories and this one fits the bill. 'True Detective' is captivating and creative, Huebner is a welcome new novelist in this genre. All I want to know is, when's the next book coming out?!

If you are a fan of detective novels but sometimes find them, well, a bit less than substantive, or a fan of literary fiction but find it a bit dry, this book is for you: a serious work of fiction elegantly packaged as an exciting NYPD detective story. A subtext commentary on the war in Iraq is woven into the plot. This does not overstep into allegory but enhances and elevates the story into a broad context without losing focus on the detective story. The author builds the main character through first person narration and adroitly develops the other characters - a fascinating lot, including some wonderfully drawn women - through dialogue worthy of Chandler. The imagery is startling and bold as for the plot, well, I found it thoroughly engaging - and good luck guessing. This is the best book I have read in a long, long time.
