Overview

What is the “fasting” Christians or disciples of Christ ought to engage in? What drove men and women in biblical times to fast? What is the purpose for it? And when should a person resort to prayer and fasting?

Unfortunately, there is a general misunderstanding and lack of knowledge in Christianity today about biblical fasting. From the Jewish origins, this book explores the understanding of fasting held by the patriarchs and gives us guidance in restoring scripturally sound practice of fasting in our lives and in today’s churches.

If we desire to have the faith of the men and women of the Bible, and accomplish the great things they did, then we ought to pay close attention to what is written in scriptures. Fasting together with prayer is difficult. It is something we learn to do and not compromise on. It is not a command of God, but rather a privilege that God extends to us in our time of need.

This book takes you down a path in understanding true fasting and the implications it has for the practice of your faith in God. It will open your eyes and guide you away from fasting in vain and frivolously. It will guide you in your fast, so your heart may come to cherish the words of Daniel, “We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy”.

Meet the Author

Educated at MIT and Columbia University, Ohene Aku Kwapong spent over 10 years working in various campuses’ Christian outreach, helping both students and professors understand the bible from a “practice of life” point of view. As a professional, his career has taken him from Boston, New York, New Jersey, through Texas and Louisiana, where he worked within different singles’ ministry emphasizing excellence as a hallmark of the life of a Christian. He further moved on to London, where he continues to engage other professionals in a ministry of one-to-one discipleship and individual responsibility in building a practical Christian faith.

From 1986 through 1993, the author faced a series of challenges and tragedies that strengthen his resolve in learning to depend on God and developing a practice of faith that was bent on helping others. From personal tragedies, sleepless nights, and triumphs came this book on Fasting. The book is nothing more than sharing with others a lesson learned over a seven-year period. If there is any one lesson the author wants you to take away from this book, it is this; “with man, the end justifies the means, but with God, the means justifies the end.”
