Overview

Disaster Number One: Men

Hard knocks and hunger taught Faith Duffy not to believe in love. Still, when she married her very wealthy—and very old—husband, she became the perfect wife. And then he went to that big bank in the sky, leaving Faith with lonely nights, a pile of money, and a total mess of a pro hockey team. Heck, Faith doesn't even watch hockey!

Disaster Number Two: Passion

But most of America and half of Canada is watching Ty Savage. His lethal sex appeal and deadly right hook make him the favorite of fans. For most of Ty's life, he's dreamed of winning the Stanley Cup. The last thing he needs is a bimbo messing up his plans.

Disaster Number Three: Love

Faith loathes Ty on sight, but she can't stop thinking about him all day . . . and night. Then a moment of temptation ends with Faith in Ty's bed, and she begins to see there's more to him than sex appeal. Ty discovers there's far more to Faith than beauty and billions. But a relationship with Faith is impossible, and falling in love—that would be a disaster.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Bestseller Gibson's thoughtful stand-alone romance immerses the reader in the world of professional hockey and the hearts of two compelling characters. Ty Savage, newly signed player with the Seattle Chinooks, is devastated by the death of the team's elderly owner, Virgil Duffy. Duffy's young widow, Faith, an ex-stripper trophy wife who knows nothing about hockey, will now be the team's owner, much to everyone's dismay. Though Ty and Faith's initial mutual dislike quickly evolves into an all-consuming passion, they soon discover that their attraction goes much further than sexual heat. Magnificently breaking with stereotype, Ty is a tenderhearted man who wants a lifelong relationship, while Faith is emotionally strong, intelligent and caring. With humor and eloquent prose, Gibson (Not Another Bad Date) brings substance and depth to this loving, modern romance. (May)

True Love and Other Disasters

Chapter One

The night before Virgil Duffy's funeral, a storm pounded the Puget Sound. But by the next morning, the gray clouds were gone, leaving in their place a view of Elliott Bay and the spectacular skyline of downtown Seattle.

Sunlight cut across the grounds of his Bainbridge estate and in through the towering windows. Among the guests honoring him at his wake, there were those who wondered if he was up in heaven controlling the notoriously gray April weather. They wondered if he'd been able to control his young wife, but mostly they wondered what she was going to do with the pile of money and NHL hockey team she'd just inherited.

Tyson Savage wondered that himself. The voices pouring from the formal living room drowned out the sound of his Hugo Boss dress shoes as he moved across the parquet flooring of the entry way. He had a really bad feeling that the Widow Duffy was going to screw up his chance at the cup. The bad feeling bit the back of his neck and had him adjusting the tight knot of his tie.

Ty walked through the double doors and into a large room that reeked of polished wood and old money. He spotted several of his teammates, spit and polished and looking slightly uncomfortable amongst the Seattle elite. Defenseman Sam Leclaire sported a black eye from last week's game against the Avalanche that had resulted in a five-minute penalty. Not that Ty held a muck-up in the corner against a guy. He also had a reputation for throwing the gloves, but unlike Sam, he wasn't a hothead. With only three days to go before the first playoffs game, the bruises were bound to get a hell of a lot worse.

Ty stopped just inside the door, and his gaze moved across the room and landed on Virgil's widow standing within the sunlight spilling through the windows. Even if the sun hadn't been shining in her long blonde hair, Mrs. Duffy still would have stood out amongst the mourners surrounding her. She wore a black dress with sleeves that reached just below her elbows and a hem that touched just above her knees. It was just a plain dress that looked anything but plain as it poured over her incredible body.

Ty had never met Mrs. Duffy. A few hours earlier, at St. James Church, was the first time he'd seen her in person. He'd heard about her though. Everyone had heard about the billionaire and the playmate. He'd heard that several years before the Widow had snagged herself a rich, old man, she'd been working a stripper pole in Vegas. According to the gossip, one night while she'd been rocking her acrylic heels, Hugh Hefner himself had walked into the club and spotted her onstage. He'd put her in his magazine, and twelve months later, he'd made her his playmate of the year. Ty hadn't heard how she'd met Virgil, but how the two had met didn't matter. The old man dying and leaving his team to a gold digger did. One whole hell of a lot.

The talk in the locker room at the Key Arena was that Virgil had had a massive heart attack while trying to please his young wife in the sack. The rumor was that the old man had blown out a heart valve and died with a big ol' grin on his face. The mortician hadn't been able to remove it, and the old man had gone into the cremation oven wearing a hard-on and a smile.

Ty didn't care about rumors, and he didn't care what people did or whom they did it with. If it was good, bad, or somewhere in between. Until now. He'd just signed his contract with the Seattle Chinooks organization three months ago, partly because of the money the old man had offered him, but mostly for the captaincy and a shot at Lord Stanley's cup. Both he and Virgil wanted that cup, but for different reasons. Virgil had wanted to prove something to his rich friends. Ty wanted to prove something to the world: he was better than his dad, the great Pavel Savage. The cup was the one thing that had eluded them both, but Ty was the only one who still had a shot at it. Or at least he'd had a good shot until Duffy croaked right before the playoffs and left the team to a tall, blonde playmate. Suddenly Ty's chance at the biggest trophy in the NHL was in the hands of a trophy wife.

"Hey, Saint," Daniel Holstrom called out as he approached.

Ty had been given the nickname "Saint" his rookie year, when after a night of especially wild partying, he'd played like shit the next day. When the coach benched him, Ty had claimed he had a flu bug. "You're like your father," the coach had said, with a disgusted shake of his head. "A damned saint." Ty had been trying and sometimes failing to live down the reputation ever since.

He looked across the shoulder of his navy blazer and into the eyes of his teammate. "How's it goin'?"

"Good. Have you given your condolences yet to Mrs. Duffy?"

"Not yet."

"Do you think Virgil really died while doing his wife? He was what? Ninety?"

"Eighty-one."

"Can a guy still get it up at eighty-one?" Daniel shook his head. "Sam thinks she's so hot she could raise the dead, but frankly I doubt that even she can work miracles on old equipment." He paused a moment to study the young widow as if he couldn't quite make up his mind. "She is smokin' hot."

"Virgil probably had pharmaceutical help, eh?" Ty's own father was in his late fifties and was still getting it on like a teenager, or so he said. Viagra had given a lot of men back their sex lives.

"That's true. Isn't Hefner in his eighties and still having sex?"

    True Love and Other Disasters

What a sweet story. Ty and Faith are such a cute couple. This book actually has substance because it works on the relationship before they hop into bed together. I loved the story revolving around Faiths commitment and love for her husband who died. I simply could not put this book down. I thought it was as good as Rachel's other book "See Jane Score."
The only complaint I would give the book is the title. Rachel could have come up with something that matched the story a little better, but what the hey...
Highly recommend this book for romance junkies who like it light and sweet. Can't wait for Rachel's next one in the spring of 2010!!

    Love Rachel Gibson!!!

I am a big fan of Rachel Gibson's Chinook hockey series books! I really loved this book! I really felt Faith and Ty's pain towards the end of the book. I love how Ty took care of everything! I love how Rachel can make you laugh and cry with the characters in the book! I love Rachel's writing and am enjoying this series immensely! This is a definite re-read again for me!

Oh my God-have a fan nearby!

This was the first book I picked up from Rachel Gibson, and I absolutely loved it! I don't really bother with hockey, but I think I may pay more attention to the sport now. This book hooks you from the start; I fell in love with the main characters. The author doesn't develop supporting characters or their stories very much, so the main focus is on the couple. The tension and steamy love scenes definitely raise your temperature without making this book fall under rauchy or crude. I wish the "perfect" bodies were a little more realistic, but hey, it's a minor blemish in what I consider a great chick-lit. Rachel Gibson's definitely near the top of my favorite authors in this genre. Her books are similiar to Susan Andersen's, who I think is quite good as well.

    Fun, easy reading

This book is so much like Susan Elizabeth Phillips novel "It Had to Be You". Faith Duffy, former owner's trophy wife, inherits a hockey team. She knows nothing about hockey and clashes with the team captain, Ty Savage. Yet, even though I know the plot and have read a similar story, it is still a great story line and entertaining. I liked Faith and Ty. I was happy reading their story.

Rachel Gibson books are fun, easy reading. But that is what I wanted and was not disappointed. It is nice to just kick back and have a good time in a novel. I have had a great time reading the Chinook Hockey team novels.

    I like the Chinooks

I am not a hockey fan but I do like the books about the Chinooks. Mr. Savage is very nummy sounding and even though I'm not a huge fan of Faith, I did like these two together.

    I love Rachel Gibson

This was the first book of hers I've read. I thought it was so adorable and fun to read that I went out and bought several more of her books. So far, I haven't been disappointed. I love her characters and writting style. By the end of the book you are so attached to the characters and their interaction you feel like your going to miss them like you would miss talk to a friend.

    Great for a rainy day!

I always look forward to reading Ms. Gibson and I was able to experience her humor, steam and hockey theme. The characters were likable, though some seemed undeveloped. I'd like to see a sequel to this book. While this is not one of her novels that will take a place in my permanent library, it made my rainy weekend delightful.

    Another good read by Gibson!

I am a fan, and own all the books by Gibson. These are not literary masterpieces with in depth character development - they are fun, witty, easy reads with lots of AMAZING chemistry between the leads. If that is what you like to read, you will love this book!

Though the plot is ice thin, fans will enjoy Rachel Gibson's fun tale of love

"Bunny" beautiful Faith Duffy married a much older wealthy man, Virgil who took care of his trophy wife in life and in death. However, people disrespect Faith for everyone assumes she married a guy five decades older than her for his money. Though more like a grandfather-granddaughter relationship instead of a married couple, the stripper and the banker loved one another; she grieves his death as she is back all alone.----------------

Besides money, Faith inherited the Seattle Chinooks hockey team; Captain Ty Savage is outraged that a brain dead model is taking over the team as he assumes she is unaware of the surface they play on and probably believes a crossbar is something to dance on. She disdains him as much as he does her because she thinks his disrespectful attitude towards her sucks and should land him a season's worth of misconduct penalties. However, as they become better acquainted their attraction could melt the ice in the Chinooks' rink.--------------

This lighthearted contemporary frolic is an amusing entertaining sports romance in which two seemingly polar opposite worlds body check one another. The story line is ice speed-skating fast but filled with plenty of hip check humor. Though the plot is ice thin, fans will enjoy Rachel Gibson's fun tale of love between a couple, who brings differing meanings to a hat trick.------------
