Children's Literature - Alison F. Solove
Ever since she was rescued from a basket on the river when she was two, twelve-year-old orphan Lilia has been a servant to a shepherd. When his wife threatens to sell her to the cruel miller, she decides to run away to the North Kingdoms in search of her true family. The shepherd's son, Kai, and daughter, Katrina, join her. On the way, they stumble into the realm of the Elf King, whose beautiful daughter enchants and kidnaps Kai. Lilia and Katrina can only win him back by stealing Odin's clasp from the royal family of the North Kingdom. They become servants in the palace, searching for the clasp. Katrina falls in love with a handsome young man, only to discover he is actually the prince of the North Kingdom. To choose his bride, his parents have devised a mysterious Princess Test to find a woman who is a true princess. Lilia and Katrina eventually discover that one can only pass the test by not falling asleep on a luxurious, enchanted bed with a tiny pea under the mattress. While searching for the clasp, Lilia accidentally passes the Princess Test, proving she is the long lost princess of the North Kingdom, kidnapped by the Elf King long ago. She finds the clasp and, with it, tricks the Elf King into releasing Kai and all the other human children he has kidnapped. Katrina marries the prince of the North Kingdom, who loves her even though she is not a princess. Kai is made a knight. And Lilia learns to be a true princess with the help of her newfound family. The Princess Test provides a loose link between the novel and Hans Christian Andersen's story of The Princess and the Pea. Zahler's writing frequently falls into cliches of plot and writing from other fairy-tale-based middle readers. Even so, fans of Ella Enchanted and similar novels will enjoy the book. Overall, Zahler's story is charming and suspenseful, but not a stand-out work. Reviewer: Alison F. Solove

Gr 4–6—This reinterpretation of "The Princess and the Pea" begins with Lilia running away from the only home she has ever known when she overhears her foster mother planning to send her away to work as a servant. Joined by Karina and Kai, her foster mother's stepchildren, Lilia decides to travel north to see if she can discover her true identity. The three hear stories of the Elf-King and are warned to stay on the road as they travel through the forest, but are forced to flee from bandits and stumble onto the elves' Midsummer celebration. Kai is immediately enthralled by the Elf-King's daughter and forced to stay with her unless Lilia can retrieve a jeweled clasp from the local king's castle. Lilia and Karina start work as maids at the palace and begin their search. The only room they cannot enter is reserved for the young women who arrive at the palace to try the "true princess" test, which no one has yet to win. Eventually they find a way into the room, which has only a bed inside. Karina falls asleep, Lilia doesn't, and this leads to the discovery of her past. It also leads to the discovery of the clasp, Kai's eventual freedom, and the betrothal of Karina and the prince. Readers who enjoyed Gail Carson Levine's Ella Enchanted (HarperCollins, 1997), Zahler's The Thirteenth Princess (HarperCollins, 2010) or E.D. Baker's "Tales of the Frog Princess" series (Bloomsbury) will also relish this tale.—Terrie Dorio, Santa Monica Public Library, CA
