True Tales of Ghostly Encounters Review

Want to curl up with a book of short personal encounters with the paranormal? True
Tales of Ghostly Encounters by Andrew Honigman has it all: messages from the departed souls, return visits by the departed, warnings by the dead to save a love one, unfinished businesses, spiritual experiences of young people, visions of personal experiences of the afterlife and past-life memories, stories from the past by memories in the early years of the nineteenth and into the twentieth centuries, supernatural communication at the moment of death, and gifts and blessings from the departed. Andrew Honigman has compiled what he considers the best of these stories into this highly interesting book from a collection of stories published in "Fate" magazine.

Since its inception, Fate magazine has published literally thousands of accounts of ghostly encounters. Stories in this book are practically all first person accounts of ghostly activity. All stories are short, as would be expected because of the space limits of a magazine. There are 144 accounts in this book, averaging two pages each. They cover 6 decades (1954 till 2002) and represent everything from family pets to loved ones making final contact. Some are sad, some are richly humorous, and some simply are. Friends relate a few of the stories or relatives of the actual witness but the vast majority comes straight from other people as well. Most of these stories, told by the witnesses in their own words just ooze the credibility and would make even most skeptics admit that these people believe that they saw something whether they did or not. Some of these stories are very well written and others less so but given the wide range of backgrounds represented by those who wrote these stories that should come as no surprise.

This collection of stories comes from Fate magazine, and hence is merely a collection of anecdotes. There is no major theme; no attempt to convey some great truth, just simple reassurance that death is not the end of everything. The only real disappointment is that some of the stories are very short and give far too few details with some of the accounts being less than a page long but again given the nature of this book that is no surprise. In any compilation of stories like this one learns to take the good with the bad and that is certainly the case here because there are several very detailed narratives that more than make up for those stories that leave something to be desired. Regardless of anything else though, the people who wrote these stories believe in what they claim to have seen and that sincerity comes through in their stories.

This is one of those books which, if you believe in life after death, you can read these stories and say, "Yeah, I can see that happening;" if you don't believe in an afterlife, you will probably be wasting your time and money on this one. If, in either case, you are simply looking for a book with light-weight stories about the afterlife, you will find this an enjoyable book to read. This is not a great book, nor is it one that will ever make a "must read" list. It can be, however an enjoyable break from serious reading, and certainly will help to pass some time. So if you enjoy this type of story, I recommend this book. If you are looking for something that will convince you of the existence of life after death, you will need to keep looking. Curl up with this book & enjoy it with all the lights on!
