Library Journal
In August 1766, adventurer Giacomo Casanova wrote to a friend, "I have little affairs which keep my memory in a constant state of alertness." This signed letter is one of some 30,000 items that swell this collection by Do Lago (president, National Lib. of Brazil), which features wide-ranging documents-manuscripts, government publications, photographs, sketches-that illuminate the lives of more than 100 people, from Alfonso VII of Spain to Queen Victoria to John Lennon. Most entries consist of a full-page reproduction of the original document and several paragraphs of commentary identifying the person and context, describing the document, and suggesting its importance; a portrait or photograph of each individual enhances the text. A separate section contains transcriptions of the English documents and translations of non-English originals. While Do Lago's writing is practical and informal, it's not the focus of this book. That distinction is reserved for the crisp and clear document reproductions and the exceptional photographs and illustrations, all of which lend this coffee-table book a glamorous look and feel. Recommended for academic and public libraries.-Kathryn R. Bartelt, Univ. of Evansville Libs., IN Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
