Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In this new series "True Rescue Stories" designed for reluctant readers, the adage that truth is stranger than fiction applies. Some of these true stories are pretty incredible. I remember when baby Jessica was trapped in a well and the media coverage and the relief at her final rescue. It was very interesting to learn that this experience early in life did not traumatize her and that her life just went on in a fairly normal fashion. The mine rescue stories were also big news and show how much risk is involved in a career that takes one deep into the ground. These stories all had a positive outcome. Unfortunately, the story of caver Floyd Collins was not a happy one, but it certain gave the author an opportunity to present a two page spread on spelunking safety. The closing story about a subway rescue is probably one that those of us living in big cities with subway systems can most relate to. It is amazing what some people will do in an emergency situation. The vocabulary section has an intriguing title—"Words to Survive By." There is a list of additional titles that readers might want to try and web site references to learn more about these actual events. There is an index and a final page which presents the other titles in the series. The books are well written and should appeal to a broad range of both good and reluctant readers and especially boys.
