Overview

From the Impresario of NBC’s hit show The Apprentice

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I like thinking big. I always have. To me it’s very simple: if you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big.”

And here’s how he does it: the art of the deal.

Beginning with a week in Trump’s high-stakes life, Trump: The Art of the Deal gives us Trump in action. We see just how he operates day to day—how he runs his business and how he runs his life—as he chats with friends and family, clashes with enemies, efficiently buys up Atlantic City’s top casinos, changes the face of the New York City skyline . . . and plans the tallest building in the world.

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I play it very loose. I don’t carry a briefcase. I try not to schedule too many meetings. I leave my door open. . . . I prefer to come to work each day and just see what develops.”

Even a maverick plays by rules, and here Trump formulates his own eleven guidelines for success. He isolates the common elements in his greatest deals; he shatters myths (“You don’t necessarily need the best location. What you need is the best deal”); he names names, spells out the zeros, and fully reveals the deal-maker’s art: from the abandoned property that became the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center to the seedy hotel that became the Grand Hyatt; from the race to rebuild Central Park’s Wollman Skating Rink to the byzantine saga of the property that became Trump Tower. And throughout, Trump talks—really talks—about how he does it.

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I always go into a deal anticipating the worst. If you plan for the worst—if you can live with the worst—the good will always take care of itself.”

Donald Trump is blunt, brash, surprisingly old-fashioned in spots—and always, always an original. Trump: The Art of the Deal is an unguarded look at the mind of a brilliant entrepreneur and an unprecedented education in the art of the deal. It’s the most streetwise business book there is—and a sizzling read for anyone interested in money and success.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This boastful, boyishly disarming, thoroughly engaging personal history offers an inside look at aspects of financing, development and construction in big-time New York real estate. ``I don't do it for the money,'' maintains Trump, the son of a Queens realtor who, at age 27, bought and transfigured the colossal Hotel Commodore at Grand Central Terminal. Now 40, he has built, among other projects, and owns outright, Fifth Avenue's retail and residential Trump Tower (where he occupies a double-triplex suite); owns and operates Trump's Castle, a casino in Atlantic City; is arguably the most visible young man on Manhattan's celebrity circuit (``Governor Cuomo calls. . . . dinner at St. Patrick's Cathedral. . . . I call back Judith Krantz''); and is currently developing a controversial 100-acre West Side ``Television City'' project that is planned to include the world's tallest building. For those who would do likewise, Trump articulates his secrets for success: imagination, persistence, skill at ``juggling provisional commitments'' (e.g., for land or lease options, bank financing, zoning approval, tax abatement, etc.) and most crucial of all, a true trader's instinct. 135,000 printing; first serial to New York magazine and Vanity Fair; Fortune Book Club main selection; BOMC alternate. (December 14)
From The Critics
This is a fascinating book because it is incredible. At the age of 41, Trump, the son of a Queens, New York, developer of moderate-income apartment houses, presides over a vast real estate empire with assets in the billions. Trump's world is composed of an endless series of deals and ventures, most of them monumentally successful from his point of view. The book is less an autobiography than an hour-by-hour recapitulation of how Trump spends his time plus a few lessons for those who would do the same. Trump seems to be a clever entrepreneur and exhibitionist. There should be requests aplenty for this. A.J. Anderson, G.S.L.I.S., Simmons Coll., Boston

Chapter One

Be a General

I am the chairman and president of The Trump Organization. I like saying that because it means a great deal to me. There are almost twenty thousand members of this organization at this point. I did a print ad once in which I declared, "I only work with the best." That statement still stands.

More and more, I see that running a business is like being a general. Calling the shots carries a great deal of responsibility, not only for yourself, but for your troops. Your employees' lives, to a large extent, are dependent on you and your decisions. Bad strategy can end up affecting a lot of people. This is where being a leader takes on a new dimension. Every decision you make is an important one, whether there are twenty thousand people working for you or just one.

If you are careful when finding employees, management becomes a lot easier. I rely on a few key people to keep me informed. They know I trust them, and they do their best to keep that trust intact.

For example, when I need to know something about my casinos and hotels in Atlantic City, I know I can call up Mark Brown, my CEO, and get a fast and informed answer. If I call Laura Cordovano over at Trump Park Avenue and ask about sales, she'll give it to me exactly as it is. If I call Allen Weisselberg, my CFO, he'll tell me what I need to know in twenty words or less. My senior counsel and Apprentice adviser, George Ross, can do it in ten words or less. Find people who suit your business style and you'll have fewer problems to deal with as time goes on.

Good people equals good management and good management equals good people. They have to work together or they won't work together for very long. I've seen good management get by with mediocre people, and I've also seen excellent people get stuck in the mires of bad management. The good managers will eventually leave, followed by the good workers, and you will be left with a team that gets along because they're all mediocre. Save yourself time by getting the best people you can. Sometimes this can mean choosing attitude over experience and credentials. Use your creativity to come up with a good mix.

Creative people rarely need to be motivated-they have their own inner drive that refuses to be bored. They refuse to be complacent. They live on the edge, which is precisely what is needed to be successful and remain successful.

One of my former employees was in charge of
a new project. He had done a thorough and ac-
ceptable job, but I felt that something was missing. It wasn't fantastic, which, knowing his capabili- ties, it should have been. I decided to challenge his creative ego by mentioning that it was fine but seemed to lack inspiration. I politely asked him whether he was genuinely interested in the proj- ect and suggested that perhaps that might be the problem.

Well, the guy went ballistic on me. He was deeply insulted.

And, as you can probably guess, the revision he turned in was terrific. The difference between the first draft and the final version was incredible. I didn't slam the guy because he was usually demanding of himself and had never let me down. But I had to give him a jolt.

Generals motivate their soldiers; they inspire them when it is necessary. They do the same for their highest-ranking officers. We all need a boost now and then. Learn how to tailor your method to the personalities you are managing.

Keep the big picture in mind while attending to the daily details. This can seem like a balancing act, but it is absolutely necessary for success in running a company.

A Good Reading And Reference ONLY For the serious minded Entrepreneur

This highly readable book I would recommend ONLY to the clear and serious minded entrepreneur. Trump is a master at getting the right jobs done pretty much at the righ time. His eleven steps elucidated in the text are a platform of wisdom that he has come by from his family, education and the choices he has grown used to making in his ambitious professional as well as in his private life. Mr. Trump offers no panaceas in this co-authored hand-book. I found that he tends to invite the reader to posture to their fullest as a person, planner and doer. Like all good books you may want to return to the text more than once. Every good reading experience opens new vistas and parts of your mind. You hopefully will feel motivated to evalute and re-invent yourself from time to time as Mr. Trump seems to like to do with himself. I now have read the book more than eleven times. I can see reading it as much as I need to return to its pages to either clarify or hone an idea. It does need a better index, actually a better prepared index for the readers that will come to this reading with actual results in mind. The book is written in a manner that will also invite a bit of 'reading between the lines' as well as reading behind the scenes. Mr. Trump has a formidable ego and an interesting stage presence. He blows his own horn, a lot. Which is also a lesson of merit. I read this as being a sharing of an example for some that may chose to champion their own projects in much the manner that Mr. Trump goes to battle for what he apparently believes. In my mentoring program for new business associates, IBOs, in my own growing Quixtar business as well as in building my Language/Literacy centers, there is much immediate and useful energy in this little book. I happily recommend and share this with all the clear minded and serious business people that I know. Good reading!!! All the best Dr. DuMaine, The Master-Teacher

Trump makes it look so easy

I just recently read this book and thought it was overall a C+ to a B. It lacked certain issues that could have been presented. Trump mostly chats about his successes and his attractive wife. Although he does demonstrate some good points here and there, the book was missing something. Yes, Trump has been quite successful, but he has gone through hardships too, which he left out. He made it seem like becoming a billionaire is the easiest thing to do. Easier said than done Trump.

    Trump's Own Never Give Up

I've read Mr. Trump's "Art of the Deal" and the book he did with Mr. R. Kyosaki "Why We Want You To Become Rich". I was wanting to find out more of how Mr. Trump delt with the acquisition of his properties. "Never Give Up" answered my questions and at the same time encouraged me as a person and business owner to not give up in my own day to day dealings with other people.
He gives it to you from his heart. As famous as Mr. Trump is, I've not understood the background of how he obtain his riches. "Never Give Up" explains in detail how he obtained his riches over the years. It also offers personal pictures. It's a great read.

    A Total Disappointment

I purchased this book with much anticipation, I was looking for an emotional side of Donald Trump's anguish as he worked to realign his empire after facing collaspe. Not that I was looking for him to appear vunerable to those that doubted him, but what was he thinking as the challenges mounted. Yes, he gives coaching points at the end of each chapter, and stated the challenges with each project. But the book is just an expose highlighting his numerous projects and some minor setbacks he faced. But nothing outlining the character and tenacity of Donald Trump the man. I am certain he had his reasons for this bland approach to this book, but there was really nothing powerful in this book. I admire Donald Trump, but this book falls short of my expectations as a reader.

    Below Standard

This book does a good job highlighting certain aspects of Donald Trump's lifestyle. Formatted for an easy/quick read, each chapter covers two pages or less. Thinking like a billionaire requires creativity. Here in this book you may discover a small trail of that which at least points out to you where to start, although you may get or feel 'Trumpmarized' by him constantly reminding you of his brand. Trump, in my opinion, only scratches the surface in writing about the title of the book. He is very frugal with his words of wisdom. If you want to be a billionaire, you will definitely need to go through more volumes of material and books and painstaking experiences then just reading this book only. If he is going to endorse books like this, he should quit calling himself an author. Mediocre material such as you find in this book does not live up to his moniker. Do not expect to think, act, breath, or even become a billionaire by reading this book.

    Making The Deal

A book written about 20 years ago by Donald Trump, called Trump The Art Of The Deal is a book that highlights Trumps biggest deals and how he pulled them off in sometimes seemingly impossible conditions. Trump gives the reader his 11 `Trump Cards¿ or key elements to making big successful deals. Trump even gives a minute-by-minute breakdown of a week in the life of big business showing the dedication and time it takes to be successful. He tells of what he looks for in a deal and how to make a good backup plan to the first one. This book is a brief glimpse into the life of one of the greatest big deal makers ever to grace the American real estate, casino, and any other market that money can be made in. The main idea that Mr. Trump is trying to convey is that, to be successful you must be willing to take a chance and try it. At one point in the book Trump says that you could have the best building or product idea in the world, but if you don¿t put it out there, it will not succeed. After someone realizes this fact, it is easy to see that anyone can succeed if they try to. One thing I really liked about Trumps book is his unrestrained brash retelling of his biggest deals up to the time the book was written. Most people would try to pretty the story up by not saying things like, he wanted to tear down a 44-story middle income housing unit and kick people out who had lived their for a long time just to build a new Trump building for a much higher income client base. Saying things like this may give him bad publicity, but in the world of big deals, this is what needs to be done to make a sizeable profit, and Trump knows it. One thing I disliked is that sometimes Trump seems to get sidetracked in telling about how he knows a person and the deal he met them on years ago instead of sticking to telling about the deal he is making now. When Trump does this in his book it seems to slow the reading down to a crawl and feel as if it will never end. If you are a person that is into reading about what to look for if you want to be a good businessman and make money, than Trump The Art Of The Deal, is for you. If you have a hard time reading books that aren¿t really fast paced, than I would avoid this book entirely. Overall I would rate this book a 7.5 out of 10 for its great blueprints to a successful business. It does not score higher because of the slow drawn out theme of the book that could easily be done without.

Donald Trump in a class by himself

Art of the Deal came out the same year that I made my first trip to the capital of the world and reading it dismantles the myth that Donald J. Trump was born with a silver spoon in his mouth which gave him an edge over others. It illustrates that character matters. Character is the number one ingredient that produces competent leadership. Without leadership everything else fails and society disintegrates. The other remarkable thing about the Donald is that he did not compromise his principles to get to the top. If you hold on it will eventually pay off in the long run and that is the most valuable lesson to be learned from this book. All in all it is an American classic and should be on a must read list for all, young and old and those in between because it is social science 101.

    Talking Business with the Donald

Reading this book is like having a personal conversation with Donald Trump himself. He is holding the torch of the value system that made America great, ready to pass it on to those who understand what it's all about. ¿Money may not grow from trees, but it does grow from talent, hard work and brains.¿ In all essence Donald Trump in his own unique way is saying exactly what JFK said decades ago: Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country. A must read for every entrepreneur who treasures the free market. He sure got me on a roll and I am loving it.

    Donald tells his truth.

I found this book to be of good use. Donald explains how he gets a rush everytime he makes a good deal in the real estate market. This is his passion. He also explains that passion is the key to what ever it is your goals are in life and how important it is to love what you do. Entrepreneur

Trump is one of the funnest authors that I have read to say the least. 'Trump The Art of The Deal' is amazing and filled with uplifting stories, and a week in the life of Donald Trump. Trump starts you out putting yourself in his shoes for one week, and wow it made me enjoy being a student. Then he starts actually giving tips to the reader which I will take to heart because if they worked for Donald, it can work for me, and look how far it has taken him. Background is not a bad thing, he explains growing up and making some of his first real entrepreneurial deals that made him big. I liked this book because it influenced my life with techniques from a very well known businessman. It was also easy to read, no complicated words or phrases like 'Beowulf' or 'Romeo and Juliet.' Although there are ups and downs to every book. There were not many negative sides to this novel, mainly the fact that Trump woulod sometimes explain a situation for to long or give to much detail that the reader did not need to know. Otherwise I would strongly recommend 'Trump The Art of The Deal' to anyone. On the cover there is a quote saying 'He makes one believe in the American dream again.' - New York Times. This is true, if he can do it the way he did it, then anyone has the possibilities to. I think that the main theme that Trump is trying to get across is, if you are not going to try, then don't complain to the person that did try. Also to believe in yourself, and anything is possible.
