Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Although this collection of first-person accounts from teenagers "never coheres around a central topic," said PW, it is "frequently heart-rending... offer[ing] more than Bode's title implies." Ages 12-up. (Jan.)
The ALAN Review - Charles R. Duke
Eighteen adolescents talk about the need for a friend, someone who will listen, offer advice, and, most importantly, can be trusted. Their stories reveal a variety of experiences - drugs, running away, being pregnant, joining gangs, getting into fights - but throughout the interviews runs the common thread of needing to be accepted by their peers. What separates this collection of interviews from others is the emphasis upon friendship, and how each of the stories focuses on what friendship ought to mean. Interwoven throughout are comments from other adolescents, suggesting how they might have responded to a situation that is described in the interview. The stories are realistic, recorded in the voices of the teenagers themselves, and no pat solutions for the problems are offered. Suitable for mature students, ages 12 and above.
School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-A vivid portrayal of the world of adolescent friendships through raw, unedited interviews. This is not so much a book about peer pressure as it is about making choices regarding friendships. These exchanges are often poignant-many show anguish, maturity (or lack thereof), loneliness, and communication problems between peers and with adults. Isolation from adult caring and guidance has led many of these young people to make poor choices about their relationships. Friendships between girls appear to be more fragile, often ending because of disagreements over relationships with boys. Sex is openly discussed, as is the lure of gangs. The desire to be accepted for oneself, to be loved, and to have good self-esteem is apparent in all interviews. Similar to Bode's Truce (1991) and The Voices of Rape (1990, both Watts), this title gives today's YAs yet another realistic, up-to-date book that speaks to their needs. More in-depth and frank than Julie Tallard Johnson's Making Friends, Finding Love (Lerner, 1992), it's also enlightening reading for adults who deal with teenagers.-Judy R. Johnston, Auburn High School, WA
Stephanie Zvirin
Even though this book seems a bit more scattershot than some of the author's previous ones, it leaves no doubt that Bode knows what concerns YAs and how to speak to them through books. The subject here is peer relationships--friendly and not. The young people whose words she has collected relay their concerns seriously and frankly, and, as is usual in Bode's books, they come across as distinct, real kids--angry, confused, happy, not always articulate--sometimes all at once. Topical issues--teen pregnancy and drug use, disability, homosexuality, even sexual harassment--are woven into the testimonies (in fact, it seems nothing's been left out), and Bode has tried to change the pace with some interview-style segments. Teens looking for answers won't find things spelled out here: Bode eschews glib assessments about behavior and morality. What she offers is simply food for thought, presenting it in appealing voices that kids may feel sound tremendously familiar--almost like the voices of people they know.
