Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
The giant from the folk tale Jack and the Beanstalk finally reveals the true story! He explains that he does not have an easy time due to humans. Jack does not fool this giant even though Jack thinks he is hiding in the giant's house; the giant can smell him. Jack has the nerve to steal some gold while the giant naps. Jack tricks the giant again when he tries to steal the goose which lays the golden egg. Jack appears for a third time and the giant is really angry. He listens to his lovely gold harp play music which Jack takes and then goes down a big beanstalk. After falling from the beanstalk, the giant decides he needs to give up on Jack. It may take another book to find out if the giant returns to get his stolen things or not. This story could be similar to Szcieska's True Story of the Three Little Pigs except this tale is not as clever nor is it as well-illustrated. In some cases, it tries too hard to be funny for early elementary readers and in some cases; it assumes readers already know the story and leaves out important details. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk

    Jack and beanstalk with twist!

My daughter absolutely love this book. She runs around the house screaming "fi fy fo fum." However, this is not a traditional Jack and the Beanstalk, so I bought the common story as well.
