Overview

Beautiful instruction to perfect surrender and trust in God! This book contains the secret to happiness and peace, and is short and easy-to-read. Inspiring work that makes holiness attainable to everyone.

“Since it is the most perfect act of charity and the most pleasing and acceptable sacrifice that is given to man to offer to God, there can be no doubt that whoever practices entire submission to His will lays up inestimable treasures at every moment and amasses more riches in a few days than others are able to acquire in many years and with great labor. To remain indifferent to good fortune or to adversity by accepting it all from the hand of God without questioning, not to ask for things to be done as we would like them but as God wishes, to make the intention of all our prayers that God’s will should be perfectly accomplished in ourselves and in all creatures is to find the secret of happiness and content.” (page 39).

Meet the Author

St. Claude de la Colombiere was born in 1641 in France of noble parents. He entered the Jesuits in 1659 and was appointed a superior in 1674 of the Jesuit house in Paray-le-Monial. It was here that he became the spiritual director of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and became instrumental in the spread of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He was sent to England in 1676 to serve as the preacher to the Duchess of York (later Queen of England).

He continued to live his vocation exactly, even amid the distractions of court life, and maintained correspondence with St. Margaret Mary via letter.

St. Claude was abruptly arrested and denounced as a conspirator. He was exiled from England to France, where he spent the last two years of his life at Paray-le-Monial and died in 1682. His his relics are preserved in St. Margaret Mary's monastery.
