Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Given the ubiquity of news and channels dedicated to the weather, most of us now know what a tsunami is—a series of huge waves triggered by a sudden moving of the ocean floor. In this book the focus is the tsunami of 2004 that devastated millions and killed 230,000 in a dozen countries. A tsunami travels very fast and can reach a speed of 600 miles per hour. The accompanying diagram and photo explain the cause and also that you could be on a ship and not even realize there was a tsunami underneath. Earthquakes are not the only cause of tsunamis—they can be triggered by volcanoes, asteroids hitting near or above the earth, and even a landslide. The stories of survivors are amazing and so is the quick thinking of Tilly Smith who was vacationing in Thailand when she recognized the signs of the coming tsunami. If the water at the beach starts to recede, head for the hills and potential safety. The remainder of the text addresses the steps being taken to warn people of impending danger. One interesting comment in the book is the impact that removal of some of the natural barriers such as reefs, dunes, and mango forests that in the past reduced the strength of tsunamis. The book closes with additional resources—books, websites, places to visit, a glossary, an index, and a brief blurb about the author. Part of the "A True Book" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
