Overview

It’s another beautiful day of your paradise vacation in South Asia. You look out onto a calm sea on this day after Christmas, already looking forward to ringing in 2005. But why is the ocean receding so far from shore? Are those fish flapping around in the sand? Something is not right. Your island getaway is about to be devastated with the 80-foot-plus waves of one of the worst tsunamis in history.

The 2004 Asian Tsunami was the result of the second largest earthquake ever recorded. Lasting over eight minutes, it was also the longest on record. The quake measured 9.0 on the Richter scale, large enough to vibrate the entire planet, violent enough to move an ocean. Through eyewitness accounts and dramatic photography, the first chapter of Tsunamis puts you in the terrifying path of the wave that washed ashore in many countries. The tsunami wiped out whole communities and claimed an estimated 230,000 lives. Tsunamis explores the science, history, and personal experience of tsunamis and shows kids what scientists are doing to develop early warning systems so we can survive such disasters in the future.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004 was the result of an earthquake that caused the earth to wobble. The huge wave and wall of water created by this earthquake brought death and destruction to countries bordering the Indian Ocean. It is hard to imagine a wave 110 feet tall, but that is what it measured in some places. Amazingly, the island of Simeulue, which was the first to be hit, had the smallest loss of life because the islanders knew that an earthquake meant that they should run for the hills. Other parts of Indonesia were not so fortunate, and thousands of people died. The Fradins provide accounts of the Japanese Tsunamis in 1771 and 1792, Krakatau in 1883, and Alaska and Hawaii in 1946. Pictures of the destruction caused by these powerful waves fill the pages of the book. If you ever had any doubt about the force of water, just looking at these pictures would be proof of the danger. What are we and other countries doing to help citizens avoid such devastation? The Pacific, West Coast, and Alaska Tsunami Warning Centers have been in operation to protect the U.S. Other centers are located in Japan, French Polynesia, Chile, and now in the Indian Ocean. In addition, people are learning to pay more attention to animals which seem to be able to sense the vibrations or hear the sounds and heed their warning of impending danger. The book concludes with a glossary, a list of further reading material, web sites, a bibliography, a list of interviews, and an index. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
