Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
"Music Makers," a series from The Child's World, includes volumes about individual instruments and four volumes on the string, percussion, woodwind, and brass sections. Presented in a large, almost square-shaped format, each book about a single instrument features a description of that instrument, a bit of its history, a discussion of its construction and sound, and something about how to play it. The pages of clear, simple text are accompanied by striking color photographs, showing close-ups of the instrument and often of the ethnic diversity of its players. In a shot of a musician hugging close his enormous, gleaming, beautifully engraved instrument, Tubas displays its most dramatic photo on the cover. Admirers of the tuba will be intrigued to learn that the tubing on this deepest of all basses (first produced in 1835) is sixteen feet long. Although brief, the information is enough to introduce young music lovers to an instrument of the orchestra and convey something of its place in the world of music. A short glossary, a related-instruments section, and an index add to the usefulness of the books in this attractive series. 2003, Child's World, Talcroft
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-Simple books with minimal texts describe the basic features of these instruments. Each spread features a short paragraph of large-print text facing a glossy photo or reproduction. Most of the pages have a topic heading ("The Trombone's Shape," "Parts of a Tuba"), and each illustration is captioned. While colorful, a number of the pictures are stock images and don't precisely coincide with the text. A paragraph considering the question, "How Old Are Tubas?" faces a photo of a man in his North Carolina tuba shop. The text mentions the variety of tubas but the caption does not indicate what types are depicted. These titles may be useful in collections where the most basic material on musical instruments is needed; other collections can pass them by.-Tim Wadham, Maricopa County Library District, Phoenix, AZ Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
