Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Even if you are not familiar with the original books about the cricket in Times Square by George Selden, this spin-off may encourage young and old to go seek out the original. Our friend Tucker the mouse is having an awful time. How can he sleep with the band above him rehearsing to win the Battle of the Bug Bands in Bryant Park? Tucker complains to his friend Harry the cat about the racket. Harry remarks that if the band wins the contest then they would go away. What an idea. Tucker is just the one to help make that happen and he offers his services to be the band's manager. Harry and Chester the cricket attend a rehearsal and they are impressed. Unfortunately on the day of the big event one of the beetles (a pun perhaps) takes a fall and is unable to perform. Is it curtains before the curtain goes up? Not really. The solution will please young readers as will the delightful illustrations. They strongly support the story, but also bring added humor through great expressions and amusing settings for all the characters. A cut above most early readers, this is a level 2 book. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
From the Publisher

"This well-told tale will appeal to the many young readers and their friends whose family members are in bands, and it serves as a wonderful introduction to the beloved characters in George Selden’s The Cricket in Times Square."
--School Library Journal

School Library Journal
Gr 1–3—Emerging readers will appreciate Feldman's contemporary setting as Tucker Mouse, Harry Cat, and Chester Cricket contend with a beetle rock band disturbing their sleep under Times Square. The band is practicing to win the Battle of the Bug Bands competition and travel the country. Harry convinces Tucker that quiet will return once the beetles hit the road, and Tucker becomes their manager. Chester Cricket is called in to play drums at the last minute and, despite his novice status, the band wins the competition and Tucker is sad when the beetles are gone. The Ivanovs' intricate ink and watercolor illustrations reflect the charm of Garth Williams's characters and original setting but add many details including varied visual perspectives and characters that exude facial and kinesthetic expression. Readers will pore over the instruments in the beetle band, including a drum set made of a fuse, thimble, button, and bottle cap. The picture depicting the band playing on the woodsy floor of Bryant Park with the backdrop of New York City skyscrapers is a mini vacation. This well-told tale will appeal to the many young readers and their friends whose family members are in bands, and it serves as a wonderful introduction to the beloved characters in George Selden's The Cricket in Times Square (Farrar, 1960).—Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI

HARRY CAT AND TUCKER MOUSE TUCKER’S BEETLE BAND (Begin Reading)

Tucker Mouse liked the everyday sounds

of the busy subway station

in Times Square.

He lived in a drainpipe there

with his best friend, Harry Cat.

Rumble went the trains.

Stomp, stomp went all the hurrying feet.

Cree, cree, cree went Chester Cricket.

He was Harry and Tucker’s friend.

He lived at the newsstand

near the drainpipe.

At night, all the sounds stopped.

While Harry went out for adventures,

Tucker loved to fall asleep

in peace and quiet.

One day, four beetle musicians

started playing their music

directly below Harry and Tucker.

That night, when the other sounds

in the station stopped,

the beetle band did not.
