Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

With the imminent arrival of her mother-in-law, unfinished Christmas shopping and unexpected dog-sitting responsibilities, Benni Harper, amateur sleuth and folk art museum curator in San Celina, Calif., has enough on her hands even before she looks into a suspicious death in Fowler's delightful 13th entry in her Agatha Award–winning series (after 2006's Delectable Mountains). When Constance Sinclair, Benni's boss, can't get help from Benni's police chief husband, Gabe, the art patroness demands that Benni investigate the death of her friend Arva "Pinky" Edmondson. Pinky apparently died of a heart attack in her sleep, but Constance is convinced she was murdered by one of the local socialites vying for admittance to the exclusive 49 Club. Benni delves into the secrets of the town's elite with her usual flair, unraveling a plot that is as dangerous as the bulls on her father's ranch and as cozy as the quilts she reveres. (May)

Central California characters come through again

I always enjoy Earlene Fowler's mysteries, though they aren't particularly deep or thought-provoking. I have often visited this Central California area, so the setting is very appealing to me. Having read as many of the series as I can, I no longer expect much of a tie-in to quilting, although the book titles and covers would lead a potential reader to assume that quilting would be more important. The main character, Benni Harper, sometimes sets up quilt displays as part of her job, but there isn't much discussion of different quilt designs, nor do quilts play much of a part in the plot. However, the mysteries usually have a twist at the end so that it is not obvious who is the villain. Jennifer Chiaverini's books have more quilting and less mystery, but both series are enjoyable and wholesome.

I love Benni Ramsey Harper Ortiz!

Each new book is sought after eagerly, and they never fail to entertain me, each layer of the plot unfolds and I am enthralled.

    Misleading title

As a quilter, I had hoped that the title indicated that there was some tie to quilting - worked into the plot, as a side interest - whatever. But it didn't have any. I plugged through, but this would not be in my list of favorite books.
