Overview

A passionate, critically incisive biography of one of the most influential rappers of all time, Tupac Shakur, and how he came to dominate hip-hop in the 1990s

In 1996 Tupac Shakur, a talented rapper and actor, was murdered in Las Vegas. No one has ever been arrested for the crime. Tayannah Lee McQuillar and Professor Fred L. Johnson examine Tupac's story, from his family roots in Lumberton, North Carolina, and Virginia through his meteoric rise to fame and tragic fall.

Shakur was a hero to the poor, the imprisoned, the hopeless, and the voiceless. But there was another side of him, revealed as his life spun out of control, as the whispered warnings from friends went unheeded and the denunciations of critics grew louder. His death ended an era when American rappers used their art to speak the truth to corporate, government, and judicial power.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Since his untimely death in 1996, rapper Tupac Shakur has been memorialized in a wide range of books and documentary films, but few are as exhaustively researched and contextualized as this latest, unauthorized biography from author McQuillar (When Rap Music Had a Conscience) and history professor Johnson. Seeking to understand the enigmatic performer, McQuillar and Johnson have enlisted a psychologist to profile Shakur, looked into a century of his family history, and paid particular attention to the political background of his mother, Afeni, a former Black Panther. The result is insightful, enjoyable and expansive, even if it doesn't answer the questions that still linger regarding Shakur's celebrity lifestyle and still-unsolved murder. For casual fans with no prior exposure to Shakur's life, this biography will prove thorough and accessible, with lengthy but informative tangents that cover seemingly all of Tupac's collaborators and associates. Readers looking for glitzy speculation will not find it here, and Tupac enthusiasts may not learn much new, but this undeniably solid biography will deepen anyone's appreciation of the hip-hop legend.
Booklist
The Shakur who emerges here is no illiterate gangster-turned-gangsta but, rather, a bright, artistic, driven man whose life and career continue to inspire many people.
Buffalo News
Fine writing and deft analysis.
The Source
An in-depth and chilling analysis of the rap icon.

Too much historical background. Too many facts pulled from sources we all have read!

I've read many of the books written on Tupac. And this was just another attempt to write the definitive biography. To me, there were some interesting parts-but overall it was too diluted with historical facts. When someone buys a book about Tupac this many years after he is gone, they want something new. I didn't find it here. You could tell these writers didn't know him. When will a family member tell the WHOLE STORY, the real story, the details of his childhood - not the cookie cutter facts we already know.
In other words when are we going to get THE OFFICIAL BIOGRAPHY!?

    Tupac an angry man

The book gave a lot of history of his roots, some made it more intriguing and some made the story very long and boring. But overall it showed that Tupac was never a "Thug" he was a man who lived by his word, a poet with strength who reached a death that was unnecessary. He trusted too freely and that is what made him used and abused by others. He had an anger that needed to die and move on. Overall, I found his story moving, inspirational and he told the story of his life through his raps. A great loss to society
