Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A pointer bird dog is in search of quail when he comes upon Mother Turkey who tells him that someone has been stealing her eggs. The dog attempts to solve the mystery by asking Raccoon and a family of skunks if they stole the eggs. Finding another turkey whose eggs have been stolen leads him to a solution. Why not put all their eggs together? The turkeys balk at first, but with the help of this kind dog the rest of their babies are saved. Shades of brown and green create the background scenes for the realistic animals in this "Holiday House Reader, Level 2" series book. It is written in the first person from the dog's point of view. He is, indeed, a sympathetic character and definitely the turkeys' best friend. With its themes of problem-solving and gentle caring for others, this will be popular all year. It will find a special place around Thanksgiving and introduces beginning readers to wild turkeys. 2005, Holiday House, Ages 5 to 7.

K-Gr 2-A sweet tale about cooperation and friendship, with a satisfying conclusion. Two mother turkeys are afraid to leave their nests because their eggs are being stolen, and a pointer puppy offers them a solution. This gentle dog, despite knowing about hunting, apparently lacks the instinct and befriends various birds and animals. Soft watercolor illustrations add meaning to the text and provide clues for some of the more difficult words ("opossum," "hummingbird," "crouched"). The expressive animal faces are charming and realistic. This beginning reader will hold particular appeal for children who love books about animals.-Mary Hazelton, Elementary Schools in Warren & Waldoboro, ME Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
This unusual mid-level easy reader employs realistically illustrated animal characters who speak to one another and use logic to solve a problem together. A hunting dog who is searching for quail meets a mother turkey who is distraught at the theft of some of her eggs. The helpful dog tries to find the thief and along the way meets another female turkey who has also lost some eggs to the same thief, an opossum. The dog helps one turkey move her remaining eggs to the other turkey's nest where they can cooperatively raise their babies together, and the babies then treat both turkeys and the dog as parents. Though the dialogue between the animals implies a fictional treatment, the illustrations are realistically portrayed and some concrete scientific concepts are worked into the text. Animal lovers who are learning to read might find this considerate pointer and his turkey friends a welcome change from more usual easy-reader plotlines, and of course, there is the ever-popular tie-in with the Thanksgiving holiday to provide another use in the classroom. (Easy reader. 5-8)
