Chapter One

Wake Up to Possibility!

The New World

Before it was proven that the world was round, it was a well-known "fact" that it was flat. This "fact" was so widely accepted that no one dared test it, because they thought if they did sail out beyond the horizon they would fall off the edge. In other words, because they believed it couldn't be done, it wasn't done.

That is, until Christopher Columbus questioned common knowledge and asked "What if?" That question literally expanded the boundaries of his country, changed history, and permanently altered accepted reality forever.

In spite of our tendency to think of reality as the nonnegotiable basis of our experience, the definition of reality changes every time someone pushes the boundary conditions of conventional wisdom. When our perception of reality changes, our behavior changes accordingly, based on what is newly considered possible. When Columbus returned from the New World, a revised world map was drawn up and this began a new era of exploration and adventure. Of course, this had always been possible, but until Columbus proved it by actually sailing over the horizon and managing to return, people's thinking limited how far they dared to venture and what they dared to attempt.

Examples of the impossible being made possiblecan be found throughout history. When Chuck Yeager flew the X-1, he shattered the myth that there was such a thing as a sound barrier. His training and instincts, combined with the new technology of the day, not only enabled him to go beyond the speed of sound, but reinforced the fact that even alleged technological barriers can be overcome. And what about Roger Bannister? On May 6, 1954, he became the fastest man on the planet when he ran a mile in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds. The closest anyone had come prior to this was 4 minutes 01.4 seconds in 1945. By breaking the 4-minute mile, a feat previously thought to be humanly impossible, Bannister broke through what Einstein referred to as "the boundary conditions of our thinking." Bannister said at the time, "Now that I have broken the four-minute mile it will be done again-it is like breaking the sound barrier of sport." And he was right-as soon as it was proven possible, many others followed suit and the new record was soon broken.

The self-development tools within this book allow you to break through your own boundary conditions of what you believe is possible in your life, duplicate the success of others you choose to model, then improve upon their success to make it your own.

People often approach me in my seminars with statements such as, "I can't make money. I never had it growing up," or, "I'll never be successful because my parents never supported me," "I don't have the right education to create wealth," or "I can't pursue my dreams because I have too many obligations." I even hear, "I can't do what I want in my life because I don't have the money." Each one of these individuals is living an illusion. These statements are clear indicators of the boundary conditions of their own thinking. They are accepting certain seeming truths about themselves that are then proven true by their experience. They are coming up against their own individual horizons beyond which they cannot conceive of venturing. Yet they are sure that they are doing battle with external obstacles over which they have little or no control. What many people do not yet realize is that these obstacles are just part of the illusion they are creating internally. They have the power to prove anything true that they believe and perceive, including more positive outcomes.

Success follows beliefs such as, "I have all I need to be incredibly wealthy and massively successful." Warren Buffett, the most successful investor of all time, was once asked, "How have things changed for you now that you have incredible wealth?" He responded, "Well, I can afford anything I want ..." Then he paused before adding, "... but then again, I always could." Even before Buffett had actually created the wealth he enjoys today, he already had the mind-set of wealth-and therefore the power to create it, because he saw the world in those terms. "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world," wrote George Bernard Shaw, "the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man." When we dare to go beyond our own internal boundary conditions, we discover a whole new world of possible futures for ourselves.

Let's play a little game ...

It's called the "What's Possible" game. The dictionary definition of possible is something "that can or may be, exist, happen, or be done." So for each of the following questions I want you to answer yes or no. Has someone, somewhere on the planet today, achieved these things?

Is it possible to have a million dollars in the bank? Is it possible to have a successful business? Is it possible to wake up excited about life? Is it possible to have happy, loving relationships? Is it possible to be fit and healthy? Is it possible to find your life's work and feel passionate about your life most of the time? Is it possible to jump off a tall building and fly?

Apart from the last question (and please don't test the theory), all of the above are possible.

Do you agree?

You will no doubt have experienced one of the side effects of this game as you answered the questions. This is called the "yes, buts." The "yes, buts" are responses such as "Yes, but that won't happen to me," or "Yes, but that's because they had privileges I don't have," and so forth. These pesky little side effects come from the little voice in your head. If you're wondering what the little voice is, it's the voice that just said, "What little voice?"

Ignore the "yes, buts" for the time being. All I want you to do right now is open your mind to the possibility that the world is made up of a countless array of experiences from the very worst to the very best. I want you to get your head around the idea and feel comfortable that everything is possible. You may not agree with this at the moment, but over the next few chapters I will attempt to prove this to you. I say "attempt to" because at the end of the day, whether you decide to believe it is out of my control. All I can do is present the evidence and ask you to draw your own conclusions. For now I ask that you just allow the idea that all things are possible to exist in your mind.

As someone once said, "A mind is like a parachute-it works best when open." This book is an exploration of the mind. What better way to begin than by prying it open? And here is my promise: If you open your mind as you read this book from start to finish and implement the techniques, you will enjoy a more abundant and fulfilling life. If you find it doesn't serve you, you can slam it shut again-the book and your mind.

    Tony Robbins Watch Out!

    This is one of the best books I've read in years - it's a classic, and will take it's place on my shelf as a reference. Just reading it inspires me to action - get yourself a copy so you can see what I mean. Detailed mindmaps of Oprah, Warren Buffet, and Donald Trump - for $24 bucks??
