Chapter One

INTEGRIDAD: CUANDO LA TEMPERATURA SUBE (Santiago 1:1-12)

"Hermanos mmos, considirense muy dichosos cuando tengan que enfrentarse con diversas pruebas".

Fueron donde aquel alfirez y le derramaron en la espalda un vaso de agua helada. Luego le lanzaron otro a la cara. El suboficial, que se habma quedado dormido en el comedor despuis de cinco noches sin dormir, abris un segundo los ojos, lo suficiente para balbucear un torpe "Gracias, jefe". Un instante despuis los entorns y los cerrs. Su cabeza volvis a desplomarse sobre la mesa sin haber tocado la comida.

Se le llama la Semana del Infierno, y es parte de la Escuela Basica de Demolicisn Submarina de la Armada de EE.UU., en la que los marinos son convertidos en las tropas ilite SEAL, un acrsstico formado por las iniciales de las palabras en inglis Sea [mar] Air [aire] y Land [tierra]. Sometiindoles a un severo rigimen de insomnio, sobrecarga de los sentidos y pruebas fmsicas, estos hombres acaban contandose entre los seres humanos mas recios del mundo.

Los esfuerzos para convertir a un hombre promedio en un comando empiezan en la Base Naval Anfibia de Coronado, en San Diego, California. El cursocomienza en octubre con la tarea de nadar 275 metros y el rigimen de exigencia fmsica se va haciendo mas difmcil hasta llegar a la prueba de fuego, conocida como la Semana del Infierno.

Este permodo final del entrenamiento caracterizado por torturas fmsicas y psicolsgicas comienza un domingo por la noche. Una luz comienza a encenderse y apagarse de manera intermitente mientras los reclutas son despertados por el instructor. Una ametralladora dispara salvas en sus omdos, y una manguera, chorros de agua. El entrenador grita sus instrucciones: "Tenemos que cumplir una misisn esta noche. Quiero que recuerden bien cada detalle". La misisn consiste en ejercicios y en yacer empapado y casi desnudo sobre frmas planchas de acero, instaladas en un muelle cercano.

El lunes, los equipos de seis hombres participan en carreras a pie llevando sobre la cabeza botes de asalto Zodiac de caucho. Cada uno pesa 115 kilogramos. El martes, tras dormir menos de una hora la noche anterior, tienen que remar casi 30 kilsmetros a bordo del bote, en un viaje de ida y vuelta hasta las aguas territoriales de Mixico.

Durante la travesma, muchos confiesan perder a intervalos la conciencia debido a la falta de sueqo. Ya en la base, la mayorma de los alumnos aprenden a dormir mientras comen.

El miircoles, los reclutas reanudan las carreras con el bote de sombrero, hundiendo sus botas de combate en la pesada arena. Esa noche, vuelven a correr. A medianoche se les ordena acostarse desnudos a la orilla del mar, donde rompen las frmas olas. Y durante toda la noche, cada diez minutos, les hacen ponerse de pie para exponerlos a los efectos del viento.

Concluida la tortura de las olas, cada estudiante recibe una oportunidad para pedir la baja. Todo lo que tiene que hacer es tocar tres veces una campanilla y decir: "Renuncio".

Al despuntar el jueves todos sufren de alucinaciones. El viernes por la tarde, la semana ha concluido y los SEAL forman una fila para ser auscultados por un midico.

Sslo considerando los horrores de la guerra puede explicarse semejante castigo. Al empujar a estos hombres al borde de la locura en tiempos de paz, la Marina les proporciona la mejor oportunidad de prepararse para enfrentar la crueldad de la guerra, si llegara ese momento.

En las primeras palabras de su epmstola, Santiago les recuerda a sus hermanos atribulados que no deben sorprenderse cuando experimenten intensos permodos de pruebas. Il sabe que el conflicto espiritual que ellos enfrentan requerira una capacidad de resistencia que sslo se adquiere a travis de la instruccisn apropiada y la experiencia supervisada. Santiago describe el rigimen de entrenamiento de Dios como "diversas pruebas". Mientras prepara a sus amigos para la inevitable prueba, esboza para ellos y para nosotros las siguientes cinco estrategias a emplear.
