Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-- Richie loves exploring the flat, dusty land that surrounds his family's pear farm in southeastern Washington. The rich history of the area more than compensates for the bleakness of the terrain. Richie and his father had spent the first summer on the farm sifting through the sand looking for Indian arrowheads and spear points, but this summer is different. His mother hates the isolation and heat, and a poor pear crop has forced his father to go away to earn extra money. While exploring a small island in the middle of the Snake River, Richie finds a magnificent stone bowl carved in the shape of a turtle, and imagines the people who made it and creates a history for them. His father returns and, in an interesting twist, his mother leaves them on the farm while she moves back to Seattle to start a new life on her own. Turtle People offers readers a nice mixture of adventure and introspection, and Richie's theories about a possible lost tribe will appeal to fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Guiberson interweaves facts about archeology and the Lewis and Clark expedition into the story in a way that not only encourages readers to dream, but also to think and act. --Jeanette Larson, Mesquite Public Library, TX
