Overview

In this smart, tender, insightful new novel, bestselling author Holly Chamberlin introduces two very different women who, over the course of two unforgettable weeks, learn about unbreakable bonds, unshakeable love, and the chances that come once in a lifetime—and change us forever...

When Elizabeth Caldwell planned a trip to Florence with her daughter, Marina, she secretly hoped for a warm, fuzzy bonding experience worthy of a Lifetime movie. But Marina—twenty-one, newly graduated, and close to her mom in many ways—has always been more the PBS type: dependable, practical, and completely in control. Elizabeth knows Marina wants to avoid the kind of "stupid mistake" that left Elizabeth a single mother at twenty-two, and she's bitten her tongue as Marina settles for a wealthy fiancé who gives her everything she thinks she wants. After all, Elizabeth—unable to bring herself to fully commit to the man she has dated for years—is hardly an expert in romance.

Still, a lot can happen on vacation, especially in Tuscany, where every scent borne on the warm breeze inspires delight, and every view makes the heart soar. There, on streets once walked by Dante and Michaelangelo, Marina is blindsided by a gorgeous Italian named Luca who shows her how gloriously unpredictable passion can be, and Elizabeth finally lets go of the role that has defined her for so long to embrace her own uncertain future...

    Re-living My Own Tuscan Holiday

I went on a trip to Tuscany two years ago and it felt fitting to re-live my experience. The writer described the sights and sounds of Florence beautifully and in most cases, accurately. Reading this novel made me want to go back even more! The city is a beautiful backdrop for this book as it is the birthplace of the Rennaissance, and the characters themselves go through a 're-birth,' if you will. The book itself was beautifully written and I could not put it down. I did want to slap the daughter, Marina, throughout the first half of the novel, though. But eventually the character's transformation made me admire her more than she annoyed me!

    entertaining look at relationships

Single mom Elizabeth Caldwell is proud of her daughter Marina who just graduated from college. However, she is concerned that her offspring is marrying Boston Brahmin Jotham Grandin for all the wrong reasons. Turning into a pop psychiatrist Elizabeth believes Marina is submissive to her fiancé on everything and marrying him not out of love or even friendship, but more a reaction to avoid the victim mistake her mom made over two decades ago. As a graduation present, she buys two tickets to Italy. Marina thinks it is for her and her fiancé, but Elizabeth awkwardly corrects her that this TUSCAN HOLIDAY is for mom and daughter. Elizabeth knows she is not a role model having been unable to fully commit to her lover Rob after thirteen years together, but hopes to reconnect with her daughter and prays Marina finds some passion. In Italy, Elizabeth is ready to give up as Marina behaves like the condemned walking the last mile to their execution. Suddenly the air seems fresher and livelier when Marina meets Luca who brings a zest for life that has both women reconsidering their relationships back home. --- This is an entertaining look at relationships especially between a mom and a daughter. The lead pair rotates perspective so that the audience sees the same event at times almost entirely different as the two female Caldwells bring personal lenses to the mix. Fans will enjoy this fine family drama. --- Harriet Klausner

    Dreaming of Italy

This lovely novel of a mother and daughter both coming of age is a great read! Chamberlin has done a wonderful job on researching Italy as well as a mother/daughter relationship. One can see she has put her heart and soul into this novel.

Elizabeth Caldwell planned a secret mother/daughter holiday to Italy for her daughter’s college graduation. She is looking forward to spending the two weeks with Marina before her daughter starts working in her career. However, during those two weeks, Elizabeth learns more about herself than she had ever dreamed possible.

Marina was not looking forward to the trip to Italy with her mother. She wanted to spend the last few weeks of freedom with her overbearing fiancée discussing wedding plans and their future. However, Marina is in for the shock of her life while on this vacation.

The mother and daughter realize that life isn’t always easy, and that spending time together does not always work to their benefit. Chamberlin does a fantastic job with the trials and tribulations that Elizabeth and Marina face while on this trip. Both women grow stronger on their own as well as their relationship.

I did not want to put the book down, as I wanted to see just exactly what Marina would do in regards to her relationship with her Jotham as well as how Elizabeth would spend her time alone in Florence. I’m excited to share this novel with my fellow friends, as I’m pretty certain they will enjoy this novel as well!

Tuscan Holiday demonstrates the interaction of a mother and her daughter who feels she has all the answers to her life.

While on a two week holiday to Florence which was a graduation present from a single mother to her daughter they both discover how protected they are concerning their ability to perceive other loved ones in their lives.

The daughter, Marina, feels she knows exactly who she is and how her life will work out with her fiance, Jothan only to discover that she has no real say in how their life together will be. She gives in to all his wishes and at first is mildly frustrated with it.
Upon meeting and falling love with an Italian young man, Luca, she starts to discover who and what she really needs in her life.

Elizabeth, who is a single mother, realizes what being alone really means and that is no longer a way she wants to spend her life. Its as if she had never let the father of her child out of her life so that she could have a healthy relationship with a man who has loved her for over 10 years.

This is both a growing and understanding time for each of them and for their relationship.

A touching mother daughter story with a twist

I picked this book up mostly out of curiousity since one of my favorite movies is Under the Tuscan Sun with Diane Lane. What I found in this book is the story of a mother-daughter relationship which I think most of us have with our own mothers and daughters. It gave me some insight into what my own mother thinks and feels toward me. The love story that ensues between the daughter and her Italian lover, I think, is something that has fascinated all of us at some point in our life. I highly recommend this book. Its a very good read.
