Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
A daydreaming television addict encounters the real world in this comic novel by a Newbery Medalist. "Byars infuses the story with her own special magic," said PW. Ages 8-12. (Jan.)
Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen
Lennie and his mom have moved a lot, but now they have inherited the Fairy Land Motel. It still doesn't seem permanent, so Lennie remains attached to the one thing that seems constant-television shows. He imagines himself winning on the quiz shows, and as the starring character in dramas. Things change, however, when something big happens to him in real life. Finally, the motel seems like home and real life seems more real than television. Lennie's quick weaning from television is a bit pat, but the portrayal of a loner with an active fantasy life is believable and engrossing.
