Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
C's Review- I love this book because it ls when Santa comes. The pictures are very pretty and how a lot of colors. Santa looks kind of thin though. We can get this copy of the book right mom? (mom's note, OF COURSE) It's really fun at Christmas time to unwrap a new book each day, we did that last year*. You should all get this book and wrap it up for your kids.

Mom's Review- A new version of one of my favorite books ever! Can I tell a fun story? The first year my husband and I were engaged we were in a long distance relationship. I emailed this to him on Christmas Eve and when he called me that night he read it to me on the phone right before I drifted off to sleep! Our household currently owns 5 versions of this book and we will for sure be getting this one. I love the more modern look to it without going over board. As you saw above in the blurb, gone is the smoking, and fur of endangered animals. But even without some pieces you still have the true classic story some great new looks to graphics and the fun of the Night Before Christmas.

Twas The Night Before Christmas is the best known poem in the English language. If someone gave us its first line, most of us could recite the second line automatically.
—Bruce David Forbes—author

School Library Journal
PreS-K—An 18th-century Papa narrates how he and the family pets assist Santa setting out Christmas presents for the family. Disney-like, full-color digital artwork lavishly depicts Moore's Christmas scenario from the kids snuggled in their beds to clever details such as Santa's reflection on each Christmas bulb. The book is subtle in its environmental and health-oriented treatment of the classic poem, except for Santa's note on the back flap saying that he has stopped smoking to be healthier and has always worn fake fur to protect animals including the Arctic polar bears. Purposeful, but not overdone.—Maureen Wade, Los Angeles Public Library
Kirkus Reviews
News flash: Santa quits smoking! This version of the famous Christmas poem has one unique feature: The references to Santa's pipe and the smoke that "encircled his head like a wreath" have been edited out of the text. Purists may decry mucking about with a beloved classic, but plenty of parents might not want to introduce old St. Nick as a smoker. An author attribution on the cover reads, "Edited by Santa Claus for the benefit of children of the 21st century," and a commitment to nonsmoking is a legitimate goal in materials intended for children. A clever note to readers from Santa on the back cover flap explains the excision of the smoking text and also affirms in a humorous way that Santa's costume uses only fake fur out of respect for "my dear friends the artic polar bears." The illustrations are greeting-card pretty, with an old-fashioned home and the father in a nightcap and holding a candle. (The lighted candles on the Christmas tree are something else 21st-century children don't need.) The toys in Santa's pack look like they come from the 1950s, and the illustrators' style is clearly influenced by animated Disney movies of that era. Well-meant, but not memorable aside from the smoke-free environment. (Picture book. 3-6)

Meet the Author

Clement C. Moore (1779–1863) is widely regarded as the very poet of Christmas Eve. Much of the way we have come to celebrate December 24th is based on his portrayal of a jolly Santa, who along with his team of reindeer brings happiness to children and joy to the world. Twas the Night Before Christmas was originally published in the New York Troy Sentinel newspaper in 1823. It has become the most famous poem in the English language. In 2011, various editions of this enchanting poem spent thirty-six weeks on the New York Times best-seller’s list in the children’s category.

Don't get this book if you plan on using on your Nook Tablet. It's slow and buggy. Also, it's just scans of the original book pages that don't fit on the Nook's screen.

Clement C. Moore did not write the story as written in this book. My husband, if living today, would be heart broken to know that with all the changes it is not the writings of his Great Uncle. I will pass on buying the book for my Great nephews and niece and other children. I think the store should post a sign to say this is not the original version

Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore has been edited to remove the reference to smoking in this lovable classic Christmas story! If you're like me, you would prefer not to portray to your children that Santa Claus is a smoker. The lines: "The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath" have been removed to benefit young readers. This book is beautifully illustrated and I love that there is a little note from Santa at the end, stating that he has left smoking behind, and couldn't be happier and healthier. What an awesome and beneficial change to this book! Great Job!

Twas the Night Before Christmas I found this book for free on Amazon and thought it was really interesting that this book had the part of smoking edited, by Santa Claus himself, out of the story.  That was one of the things that always got me thinking when I was younger about the original - my parents smoked for awhile, my sister does now, but I never have and always thought it was disgusting that he did.   This is one of my favorite Christmas stories - beautifully done with some amazing illustrations.  Definitely a must for people who love Christmas books, especially this story, and so worth what the author is selling it for.

I loved this story and found this particular edition to be very colorful with lots of details for the enjoyment of the little kids I read to. I particularly liked the reindeer characters who are darling. This was a big hit with my classroom kids and I recommend it. I have the hardcover edition and will treasure it as a holiday tradition.
