Overview

A mid the many celebrations last Christmas Eve, in various places by different persons, there was one, in New York City, not like any other anywhere. A company of men, women, and children went together just after the evening service in their church, and, standing around the tomb of the author of "A Visit from St. Nicholas," recited together the words of the poem which we all know so well and love so dearly.Dr. Clement C. Moore, who wrote the poem, never expected that he would be remembered by it. If he expected to be famous at all as a writer, he thought it would be because of the Hebrew Dictionary that he wrote. He was born in a house near Chelsea Square, New York City, in 1781; and he lived there all his life. It was a great big house, with fireplaces in it;-just the house to be living in on Christmas Eve.

Very disappointed in this book. Bought it for my 3 year old grandson. Thought it would be fun to read during the Holidays, what a bummer it turned out to be. Even though description talked about illustrations there were none. Hard to keep a little one interested without pictures. Would not recommend this book.

This is a lovely children¿s poem about a man who hears Santa Claus on his rooftop on Christmas Eve. The story is told in verse and warms my heart every time I hear it. I love to read this poem to my children at Christmas. They always try to remember the names of the reindeer just as Santa calls them out. It is a wonderful book to read and to share. This poem was written by Clement Clarke Moore. He was born on July 15, 1779 and passed away on July 10, 1863. He died at home in his Newport home in Rhode Island. He is now buried in New York ay the Trinity Churchyard Cemetery. One of his daughters Mary C. Moore Ogden illustrated his poem in a book called A Visit From St. Nicholas c 1995. Moore, Clement Clarke, `Twas The Knight Before Christmas. Cambridge: Candlewick Press, 2002. Reading Level 4.3

My eight year old son had a great time reading this book. He read it the first night of advent and every night there after until Christmas Day. The illustrations on every page really added to the poem.

We gave this recordable book as a Christmas gift for our almost 2 year old niece. Her parents were delighted that they could record their voices reading this book, and that she could pretend to read it along with them. I must say it was a big hit.

We missed having some illustrations. A picture of Santa would have help. But you can't complain when a book is free.

This is a text only version of the poem, prefaced by a short author bio and poem history. Should be free.
