Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
With all the editions of this Clement Moore perennial favorite it is hard to know just which one to select to own. With the exception of the poem illustrated by the notable artists like Jan Brett, Putnam, 1998, or Cheryl Harness, Random, 1989 or Robert Ingpen, Sterling, 2010 most are average at best. For this edition Whelan has chose a family of mice to await the arrival of jolly St. Nick featured here as a chubby, bespeckled, white haired mouse. Printed on heavy stock the double-page spreads open with a cut-away of the mouse family's house that is filled with cozy creature comforts and moves on the several of the airborne Santa and his reindeer coming in for a rooftop landing. Santa pauses in is work long enough to enjoy a snack of milk and cookies and cheese before ascending the chimney. The final spread, with reindeer leaping into the night sky carries the famous tag line, "Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight." The colorful watercolors have a homey feel to them with touches of glitter that add sparkle to the familiar poem. While there is nothing outstanding about this title neither is there anything inherently wrong with it. The happy mouse family and endearing mouse Santa along with the pleasant design and sturdy pages will make it a good choice for younger children. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1—The illustrations in this version of the celebrated poem will appeal to young children; the narrator, his family, and Santa are all adorable, large-eared mice. One spread shows a cutaway view of a small house, mice snug under colorful quilts, and a Christmas tree twinkling downstairs by the fire. The emphasis is on cozy and cute, jazzed up with judicious sprinklings of glitter on each sturdy page. An excellent version for the youngest set.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library
Kirkus Reviews

The famous poem is presented here with a cast of charming mice, including Santa Mouse in the starring role. He is shown on the glitter-accented cover flying in his mouse-sized sleigh with his team of eight tiny reindeer that truly fit that description. The attractive design features a large format with pages of heavy cardstock, and each double-page spread includes touches of glitter highlighting snow, stars and decorations. Appealing watercolors depict a cozy home ready for the holiday, with one spread showing a cutaway view like an open dollhouse. The illustrations follow an old-fashioned interpretation of the well-loved poem, with mice taking the place of the characters. The choice of mice to tell the story gives new meaning to the phrase "not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse." Sweet, but probably not lasting. (Picture book. 3-7)

Meet the Author

Clement Moore
Clement C. Moore (1779–1863), an American scholar and poet, first wrote The Night Before Christmas in 1822 to entertain his children. A friend submitted it to a local newspaper, The Troy Sentinel, where it was published on December 23, 1823. Moore's delightful description of St. Nicholas and his eight flying reindeer has since become the definitive portrait of Santa Claus.

    'Twas The Night Before Christmas

This is a lovely children¿s poem about a man who hears Santa Claus on his rooftop on Christmas Eve. The story is told in verse and warms my heart every time I hear it. I love to read this poem to my children at Christmas. They always try to remember the names of the reindeer just as Santa calls them out. It is a wonderful book to read and to share. This poem was written by Clement Clarke Moore. He was born on July 15, 1779 and passed away on July 10, 1863. He died at home in his Newport home in Rhode Island. He is now buried in New York ay the Trinity Churchyard Cemetery. One of his daughters Mary C. Moore Ogden illustrated his poem in a book called A Visit From St. Nicholas c 1995. Moore, Clement Clarke, `Twas The Knight Before Christmas. Cambridge: Candlewick Press, 2002. Reading Level 4.3

    Would not recommend

Very disappointed in this book. Bought it for my 3 year old grandson. Thought it would be fun to read during the Holidays, what a bummer it turned out to be. Even though description talked about illustrations there were none. Hard to keep a little one interested without pictures. Would not recommend this book.

    Great Book!

My eight year old son had a great time reading this book. He read it the first night of advent and every night there after until Christmas Day. The illustrations on every page really added to the poem.

    No pictures, text only

This is a text only version of the poem, prefaced by a short author bio and poem history. Should be free.

    An Awesome Gift

We gave this recordable book as a Christmas gift for our almost 2 year old niece. Her parents were delighted that they could record their voices reading this book, and that she could pretend to read it along with them. I must say it was a big hit.

    Great Classic Christmas Story

We missed having some illustrations. A picture of Santa would have help. But you can't complain when a book is free.

Terribly disappointed after reading the reviews that talked about the great pictures. This is NOT a good version for my youngsters without them.
