Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Reading a novel written entirely in emails, tweets, and instant messages might seem daunting at first, but it works here. The format isn't new—Lauren Myracle did it in TTYL (Amulet, 2004), followed by its two sequels, but it is unique and it hasn't entirely caught on...yet. The plot itself is far from groundbreaking—girl (Claire), completely oblivious to the fact that her best guy friend (Will) has a crush on her, tortures him with stories of her crush (JD). Unable to express his feelings, Will concocts an elaborate plan: he pretends to be JD and starts tweeting with Claire under a pseudonym. She totally falls for it until the plan backfires and Claire hates him for tricking her, until she realizes that she has feelings for him. Despite the predictability of the story, this is a solid debut for Rudnick, who seems tuned in to how teenagers behave and what they want. She manages to take a typical story, write it in an atypical manner, and then spin it in such a way that allows readers to overlook the sometimes-confusing format. Perhaps the originality of the style is enough to save this book from becoming another run-of-the-mill teen romance.—Robyn Zaneski, New York Public Library

Reviewed by Breanna F. for TeensReadToo.com

Claire has two best guy friends, Will and Bennett, who are complete nerds with basically no social life. She also has her best girl friend, Charlotte, aka Lottie.

Ever since she was little, Claire has been majorly crushing on a guy named JD Whitcomb. He is super-popular and Claire thinks that he'd never notice a girl like her. She is always talking about JD to Will. She always seems so upset about JD not noticing her that Bennett gives Will an idea...a very dumb idea.

He tells Will he should make up a name on Twitter and pretend that he is JD. He tells Will that he should only message Claire once, just to make her smile. But does Will listen? Of course not.

This book was absolutely delish - short and easy to read because it's written in emails, blogs, and tweets. I think that this writing style actually makes the book even better. Basically, I loved the way it was written. And the four characters of the story were awesome, as well.

This is the ultimate summer read. It has boys, which is always a plus, even if they are nerdy! And it has a really sweet girl plus a very flirty girl, which usually adds up to some trouble. I'd go pick a copy of TWEET HEART ASAP. It's a super-cute read.

    I Also Recommend:

A fun book that's written a little differently.

Claire has a crush on JD. That gives Bennett an idea and convinces Will to pretend to be JD on Twitter. At first he doesn't agree but in the end, he does. The four friends were awesome. Reminded me of another fun read called A Match Made in High School. For readers who like a different style of writing and book or like just a fun book to read sometimes.

    Cute.

This story is light, fluffy and a whole lot of cute. I enjoyed getting to know each of the characters and I enjoyed watching them bumble along until they get to the end. Will was an adorable hero and Claire was a clueless teenage young woman who was charming anyway.

Rudnick did a wonderful job of sucking me into the story and into the lives of these characters and I'm thrilled that I read it. As soon as I got over myself and got down to some serious reading, this book turned out to be a great way to spend a few hours and I enjoyed it.

Tweet Heart by Elizabeth Rudnick Review

I don't have a twitter account and have never tweeted before, but after reading this book I must say I'm quite tempted to start one. Our main character Claire decides to join the masses on twitter and can't believe her luck when her crush begins following her on line. I had some issues understanding why Claire was so hung up on JD (her crush) when she didn't really know anything about him to begin with. An attraction I can understand, but a full out crush on someone who's practically a stranger baffled me. This took me a little while to overcome but eventually I powered through.

The tweet, email and conversational format was somewhat overwhelming but I settled into it and now looking back, enjoyed the different styles. Between Claire's blog, everyone's tweets and reactions to the goings on of their friends, I found myself having fun the whole way through. Because of the unique format you feel as if you're right there in the mix with the characters themselves. Readers will want to insert their own tweets and be able to send their own emails to the characters. You're getting firsthand feedback and will want to keep turning the pages to see what these characters do next.

Lots of fun to read, definitely different than anything I've read before and would say I'd read more like it in the future. For an author's debut novel, I'd say Rudnick hit it out of the park and surprised readers all over!
