Overview

A fun twist on a favorite holiday song, and a truly dazzling countdown to Christmas.

On the first day of Christmas, my mommy gave to me, A puppy under the tree.

Kids will be singing with joy. What a magnificent Christmas present this beautiful book will be, with its shiny foil cover, spot lamination, spectacular images that count down to the holiday, and a clever children’s variation on a favorite song. Instead of the old-fashioned partridges, maids-a-milking, and lords-a-leaping, youngsters will find colorful hula hoops, wind-up toys, furry bears, trains-a-tooting, and jelly babies. Each adorable page builds on the one before, as the cumulative song grows and pictures of the fun gifts accumulate. The grand finale features tiny pictures of all the objects in the song, arranged from top to bottom in ascending order, forming a very special Christmas tree.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This is essentially an updated version of the "Twelve Days of Christmas," with gifts more practical and appreciated than three French hens. It begins with "On the first day of Christmas my mommy gave to me a puppy under the tree," and progresses until the child's friends present "twelve balloons a-flying." The artwork is bold and colorful, which helps the book serve double duty as a counting book since the objects are clearly depicted and the right size for small children to point to while counting. The repetition of each day's gifts makes no more sense here than it does in the original song—why would grandpa give "four furry bears/three hula hoops/two storybooks and a [puppy] under the tree" if mommy already put the puppy under the tree? This does make it easier for children to repeat the story/song endlessly. 2004, Sterling, Ages 3 to 7.

School Library Journal
PreS-In this retelling of the traditional song, various relatives and friends give a child presents (three hula hoops, two storybooks, a puppy under the tree, and so on) throughout the 12 days of Christmas. There isn't anything particularly new or interesting about the changed wording, and because a different person is giving each day's gift, it doesn't make sense for all of the previous days' offerings to be repeated. However, young children might be attracted to the bold outlines and bright colors of the art, as well as the use of a rebus to illustrate each new item. Attractive but unnecessary.-E. M.
