Publishers Weekly - Publishers Weekly
Dan Yaccarino presents The Twelve Days of Christmas in board book form, encouraging children to sing along with his funny and funky animal characters-"French Hens" in berets, for instance, and 11 porcine "pipers piping, dressed in kilts and playing the bag pipes." Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Cleanly-designed board pages show each of the twelve days of Christmas as personified animal depictions. The calling birds trail telephones; the eight maids a'milking are skinny, overalled cows; eleven pigs are pipers piping, and twelve dogs drum. For adults who want to sing the song and hark back to the previous pages, the book provides plenty of practice in backwards page-turning ("3 French hens, 2 turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree.") Yaccarino's brightly-colored backgrounds set off the cavorting figures interspersed with a few holiday decorative elements, as well. While this one does not carry any cumulative meaning, it is a pleasant visual accompaniment for the song. 2005, HarperFestival/HarperCollins, Ages 2 to 4.
