The author chose people who had a major influence on events of their time and the future. For each there is historical background information, a summary of accomplishments, and the significance of the accomplishments for future gererations.
This was an interesting choice of people. While the obvious, such as Julius Ceasar and Alexander are included, so are the less familiar such as Augustine and Thales who likewise had a tremendous influence on western civilization. The background data adds to the story of each person with the prevailing attitudes and problems of their time.
This book is written for the reader with a casual interest in history rather than for advanced scholars in the field. While easy to read, it has a good depth of information.
