Editorial Reviews

Stephen Peithman
"Author Debbie Lamedman offers a wide range of emotional situations and characters, with cast sizes ranging from three to eight actors. The dialogue is reflective of today's adolescents-including some of what's usually called "adult" language. "

The Author

Introduction

It has been noted, studied, and confirmed that the attention span of the average person is getting shorter and shorter. With all our modern conveniences and technological advances, it's no wonder we insist upon immediate gratification. We have come to expect it. That type of mentality is now upon us in the theater as well. The ten-minute play has become increasingly popular over the years and festivals have sprung up far and wide in order to showcase this format.Short can be just as satisfying, and high school drama departments are the perfect venues for the ten-minute play. Easy and inexpensive to produce, they provide the student actor all the challenges of a full-length play wrapped up in a shorter, more concise package. The twenty short plays in this book range from the typical to the unusual and they offer the young actor not only diversity in both theme and character, but also an opportunity to play over 106 different types of roles.I have written these plays keeping in mind the varied ages and experiences that occur during the teen years. Thus, the characters in this book range in age from thirteen to twenty, allowing teen actors the opportunity to play parts close to themselves as well as being able to stretch their range accordingly. So go put on a play. Or two. Or six. Because they're only ten minutes long, so you'll have the time. And don't forget, it's called a play. Which means you have to have fun, and I hope you do! Enjoy!
-Debbie Lamedman

Foreward

Every semester I dread the proverbial search for new monologues and scenes for my student actors. Inevitably I find myself back in the library scouring volumes and volumes of newly published anthologies, most of which don't provide me with any sort of interesting acting material. Or, I'm stuck at my local bookstore, poised with my double latte and chocolate-hazelnut scone, desperately trying to weed out the mundane from the "cutting edge" plays of last year's season. You'd think that by this point in my career I'd have a plethora of material from which to choose, and I do, but there's always that curiosity to know whether or not I've missed something really terrific for my students to explore. I mean, you can only watch Emily and George drink those sodas so many times before you want to scream. You'd think it might be easier to choose material for students at the university level. However, I still hold my breath each time I go into scene study class and await the announcement of what pieces will be performed. Will it be a semester of freshmen shouting expletives at each other and exploring unknown plays with "adult" themes because they can do that now in college? Will there be any students brave enough to tackle some Oscar Wilde or Shakespeare? Might I luck out and have students willing to delve into material that forces them to evaluate their own ethics, morals, and beliefs? I always hope the latter two questions will win out. More often than not, I find my students performing material that has simply been constructed for shock value, written by young playwrights trying to find a voice and imprinting their ideals onto a global community. However, the writing in these pieces never seem to adequately serve the characters in the play or adequately serve the actors attempting to portray those characters. That's why I like the pieces Debbie Lamedman has constructed for her Twenty 10-Minute Plays for Teens. She has captured a vernacular in her dialogue that's honest and truly representative of today's teen, and Debbie explores universal themes to which young performers can relate. The characters are rich and fully developed, have conflicts and obstacles to overcome, and find their way in a world of mixed messages and muddled images. After conducting cold-reading classes with my university students, they found Debbie's dialogue modern and relevant. They were struck immediately at the ease with which they could process and speak the text. I saw young actors perform in a way I'd never seen, because they connected viscerally to what they were reading. Even though these plays are written with teen actors in mind, they appeal to and connect with older actors as well. The problems and conflicts Debbie's characters face are not so far removed from what people of all ages must deal with in their own lives.Since using Debbie's material in class, my students have become inspired to continue using her work in a student-produced, ten-minute play festival. Of course, I'm always a proponent of any project where students take the lead and tackle the process of producing theater. But, more importantly, I'm pleased to see their acknowledgement of good writing and how it can affect and inspire them as artists. Hopefully, Debbie will continue to put pen to paper and spare me the endless hours in the library stacks, too many double lattes and hazelnut scones, and yet another semester of endless sodas in Grover's Corners.Earl D.
