For Rose Gardner, working at the DMV on a Friday afternoon is bad even before she sees a vision of herself dead. Overview

"It all started when I saw myself dead."
For Rose Gardner, working at the DMV on a Friday afternoon is bad even before she sees a vision of herself dead. She's had plenty of visions, usually boring ones like someone's toilet's overflowed, but she's never seen one of herself before. When her overbearing momma winds up murdered on her sofa instead, two things are certain: There isn't enough hydrogen peroxide in the state of Arkansas to get that stain out, and Rose is the prime suspect.
Rose realizes she's wasted twenty-four years of living and makes a list on the back of a Wal-Mart receipt: twenty-eight things she wants to accomplish before her vision comes true. She's well on her way with the help of her next door neighbor Joe, who has no trouble teaching Rose the rules of drinking, but won't help with number fifteen-- do more with a man. Joe's new to town, but it doesn't take a vision for Rose to realize he's got plenty secrets of his own.
Somebody thinks Rose has something they want and they'll do anything to get it. Her house is broken into, someone else she knows is murdered, and suddenly, dying a virgin in the Fenton County jail isn't her biggest worry after all.

Meet the Author

Denise lives in Lee's Summit, Missouri. She has six children, two dogs, and an overactive imagination. Although she lived in the south for ten years, one of her biggest regrets is that she didn't acquire a true southern accent. She can be found dancing in her kitchen with her children, reading or writing her next book. You will rarely find her cleaning.

    Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes

Rose is by far one of the most interesting characters I have read of in quite some time. I love that she didn't let herself be dragged down by her history, as many characters would had they been in her position, she always had such a positive outlook on life. Also, she is the sort of character you cannot help but root for and want to befriend in the hopes that some of her positivity will rub off on you. Furthermore, I very much appreciated that Denise was able to give us Rose's history in little bit and pieces (from all sorts of characters, like her sister, aunt, etc.) as opposed to more large information dump- it just made the book flow so much more naturally and made everything seem so much more real.

It becomes evident as you read the book that Denise doesn't dilly-dally in her writing, that she writes everything with a purpose, which, too, makes the book flow all the more naturally and makes it a literal page-turner- keeping you engaged (and on the edge of your seat) the entire time while reading it.

However, I must admit that the ending did throw me off a bit. I just felt that so much happened in the last bit of the book that I had a hard time keeping track of everything. When I thought the storyline was going in one direction it would go in the complete opposite therefore resulting in me having to reread a bit of the end (but this could have totally been my fault since I literally read this book in one sitting and therefore was most likely tired/ past the point of comprehension by the time I came to the end).

All in all, I highly recommend this book to those looking for a funnier read, albeit a funnier read with quite a bit of action. I cannot tell you how many times I burst out in laughter while reading this book. Also, I challenge you to not start talking in a Southern accent after finishing this book, with all of the characters constantly dropping their "g's" and saying things like "crappy doodles".

    Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes

This book is such a delightful story and it is truly full of Southern charm and humor! I loved reading of Rose's transformation from a timid and beat-down girl into a beautiful and confident young woman, no longer afraid to stand up for herself and no longer willing to stand on the sidelines and watch her life pass her by. She is a character that you cannot help but root for. Also, you cannot help but root for her and Joe's developing relationship- while she may not have been your typical damsel in distress he was very much so a knight in shining armor, doing everything in his power to keep her safe (even if it was something as simple as changing her lock) and putting her safety before his own. I cannot wait for the next book in this series. Denise is such an amazing author and I am so happy to have happened across her!

    Fabulous book!

It's true. I could NOT put this book down. I was hooked from the moment that I opened the book. Rose is hysterical, witty and a woman that I wouldn't mind being.

It starts with Rose working at her every day job working @ the DMV when a man approaches her counter. She has a vision of herself dead on her sofa (well, her mama's sofa due to her living with her mama) and this man that walked up to her counter holds the key to her vision.

Her mama is not an easy woman to live with and has pretty much ran Rose's life forever. When her mama winds up the one dead (don't worry, I didn't spoil anything! this is found on the back cover) Rose has to figure out how to live her life how she wants without her mama ruling her life.

This book is filled with suspense, love, a hilarious accent that you'll find yourself reading in, and a page turner that will stay by your side until you've finished it. Denise Grover Swank will not disappoint you in her first Rose Gardner mystery. I am anxiously awaiting the second novel!

Rose has had a tough life, what with having visions pretty regularly and being called a demon child by her mother. So when she sees a vision of herself dead, she stands up to her mother for the first time, has a day in the park to herself, and makes a bucket list of 28+ things she wants to do before she dies.

Unfortunately, when she gets home, her mother has been murdered, and the police suspect her. Now she has to figure out who killed her mother and if they are coming back for her. Good thing there's a hunky next-door neighbor to help keep her safe and fulfill some of those wishes. (#15 in particular)

Fun read with a nice little mystery

Interesting characters and setting. It was a bit slow in some parts. The whole series would make a great movie for cable. Would recommend for a rainy day.

    Very Funny!

I really enjoyed this book. Rose, the heroine, is a bit clueless, but in a loveable fun way. Her situation makes you understand her and feel for her. However, she does do some dumb things. Overall, I think this was a great start to a new series and look forward to reading some more of these mysteries.

I just love Rose now and I can't wait to continue the series and follow her story. Swank just has a way with her writing that transports you into her world and I for one didn't want to leave!

    Fun and Entertaining

[review contains spoilers] I flew through this book at the speed of light. Rose was likeable, and her bad situation made me root for her right from the start. It was cute and fun, and the "actiony" bits weren't too drastic and over the top. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is the less - than realistic climax where she walks into a crime den and acts like she's the queen of Sheba. For a sheltered girl with no access to even cable, her being able to do that the way she did just didn't seem believable. I also got pretty frustrated with her reactions to Joe at certain points, so to say I was eager to finish those chapters is an understatement. Other than that, the plot was interesting, there were a couple nice twists that I wasn't anticipating, and her psychic abilities weren't a distraction like I've seen other stories handle magic within our world. Definitely worth the read, and I look forward to the rest of the series.

OMG! I could not put this down.  I stayed up way to late to finish this page turner.  The mystery/suspense, action, and yes even the romance grabbed me tightly and wouldn't let go.  The characters were all awesome, in there own right.  There are people you just love, people you really hate, and people that even though they aren't the greatest you still understand them.  I can't wait until I get to read more and I most definitely will be recommending this one!

When I was in high school, I was always attached to a book. Usua

When I was in high school, I was always attached to a book. Usually it was the newest Gossip Girl, Princess Diaries, or Pretty Little Liar book. Now that I am 25, and working full-time, most of my reading happens right before bed. I've been struggling to find a book/ series that I can relate to at my age. I've outgrown the young adult books, but I don't want every book I read to be full on 50 Shades. I cannot say enough great things about this entire series. I find myself giggling like a little girl at parts and crying at others. This whole series has finally gotten me excited about reading again!

    Cute beginning to the series

Liked the frustrating chemistry between couple. The improbable scenarios were similar to number series of Evanovitch
    only more believable. Nice mystery.
