Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
For 13 years, the Actors Theatre of Louisville (ATL) hosted a festival that featured a different period, movement, or figure in theater each year. The unique and distinguished month-long event served ATL's local clientele as well as journalists, theater lovers, scholars, and the curious from far afield. This book collects some of the lectures presented at the festivals, with subjects arranged chronologically from the Renaissance to the present day. What results is a discontinuous history of Western drama, covering Commedia, Moli re, Manners comedy, the Romantics, the Victorians, the Moscow Art Theatre, Pirandello, the Weimar Republic, Molnar, Steinbeck, Wilder, and Anne Bogart. While most of these monographs are excellent and informative, a few are too dry or highly specialized to be of general interest. And the book fails to give a complete portrait of the festivals themselves, which were rich in visual content, performances, symposia, personalities, and surprise offerings. Still, this collection is a welcome addition to the literature on theater. Recommended for academic libraries and theater collections.--Thomas E. Luddy, Salem State Coll., MA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.\
