Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Sixteen-year-old Brooke discovers that she was once the victim of a divorce-related kidnapping. "Although the scenario is unlikely, the author maintains so brisk a pace and so appealingly plumbs her heroine's emotional life that the reader will want to believe in the story," said PW in a starred review. Ages 12-up. (June)
The ALAN Review - Jeanne Gerlach
Pfeffer describes one of the nation's growing concerns: missing children. Sixteen-year-old Brooke (or Amy) recognizes her father on a TV commercial that announces to the world that he has kidnapped her. She calls the 800 number to identify herself as the missing girl, and her life changes rapidly. An overnight stay with foster parents, a day in court, a meeting with her real mother and new family all seem overwhelming. But a secret student support group helps her begin to put her life back together. Pfeffer poses realistic questions for young readers to ponder. How do you know when parents truly love you? Do you love everyone when they love you?
School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-Brooke was kidnapped by her father when she was five. For 11 years she has lived first with the belief that her mother was dead and then that she simply didn't want her. But, while watching ``Still Missing'' on television, she recognizes herself and impulsively calls the 800 number. Suddenly, she is whisked off by the police, scooped up by a doting mother, and deposited into the midst of a ready-made family complete with two younger half-siblings and a sympathetic stepfather. Events spin out of her control and she realizes that in order to help protect her father from legal prosecution, she must show what a model child he has produced. She meekly complies with her ``new'' family's every wish without even a whimper of protest while they repeatedly trash the man she still loves. Finally, after weeks of suppressing her feelings, a censored letter from her father precipitates the release of her conflicting emotions. With Brooke leading the way, mother and daughter find common ground upon which to build their future together. Neither of Brooke's parents are totally guiltless. They are weak characters floating in a vague set of circumstances that often seem incomplete or simply unreal. Offering a less compelling plot than Caroline Cooney's The Face on the Milk Carton (Bantam, 1990), this novel is also far less involving. Brooke's wisdom is uncanny, and her self-restraint almost saintly. Yet, her lively narration, peppered with wry, insightful wit, and the story's balanced resolution make it enjoyable reading, if not a strong literary achievement.-Margaret Cole, Oceanside Library, NY
Chris Sherman
Fans of Caroline Cooney's "Whatever Happened to Janie?" will enjoy Pfeffer's story about 16-year-old Brooke Eastman, who learns that she was abducted by her dad after seeing a picture of herself and her father on a program about missing children. When she calls the 800 number on the TV screen, she sets off a chain of events that not only brings about her return to her mother and a family she doesn't remember, but also alters everything she assumed to be true about herself--including her name, age, and the belief that her mother didn't want her. Pfeffer perfectly conveys Brooke's hurt and resentment and also captures the mother's difficult adjustment. Readers will share Brooke's anxiety as she tries to adapt to a new family while remaining loyal to her father, and they'll understand her anger when she finally realizes the cost of her father's actions.

    Pretty good book.

Ok, the story was excellent, but I did not appreciate the bad language. What's up with that? I mean you could take it all out and you would still understand that everyone is angry. I bought this book not knowing what kind of words would be used in it, so for everyone else, here is your warning.

    A Wonderfully Outstanding Book!

I love this book, and have read it twice. I had my mom read it and she liked it. I love the way that the author made the characters come alive, and the author made me feel like I was actually in the book. The language is really extreme but it's part of what makes the characters come alive. One reason that I read the book the first time was because one of my friends read this book (in our freshmen year), and she loved it and recommended it to me and I loved it. I would recommend this book to everyone and anyone, but mostly to those people who love mysteries.

    A Wonderful Book!!!!

I loved this book it is great. I read it in like a day because I couldn't put it down. Plus it had a lot of good information in it and good special effects. I read it last year actually and I took an AR test on it because we had to take a mentoring class and read AR books and take tests. I got a 100% on the test but it is a great book.

    True Emotions

I loved this book, it was very well written. That is probably how a 16 year old girl would handle that situation, probably more tears, but very well written anyhow. I think you shoudl read this book no matter what but especially if you feel you are beginning to take your family for granted.

    A great book!!!!

I read this book when a friend referred it to me and it was great. It kept me in suspense. I could not put the book down it was so good. I read it in a half an hour because I just could not put it down. I recommend this book to everyone who likes these kind of books. I really mean it once you start you can't put it down. That is all I have to say for now bye.
