Coastal Maine

It was the blackest, rainiest night the forgotten and overgrown cemetery had seen in centuries. Ancient tombstones leaned drunkenly beneath the bones of dead-looking trees, while gnarled limbs shivered in the cold. Arthritic twig-fingers scratched the tallest of the old stone monuments like old, yellow fingernails on slate. And the surviving vampires huddled together around an open, muddy grave.

Brigit Poe, part vampire, part human, and one of the only two of her kind, was dressed for battle, not for a funeral. It was only coincidence that she wore entirely black. That breathable second-skin fabric favored by runners covered her body from ankles to waist like a surgical glove. Over the leggings, she wore tall black boots, with buckles all the way up to her knees. The chunky four-inch heels provided extra height, an advantage in battle. And the weight of them would add more potency to a kick. Her black slicker looked as if she'd lifted it straight from the back of a cowboy actor in an old spaghetti western. It was long and heavy, with a caped back, but it did more than keep the rain away. Its dense fabric would help deflect a blade.

She could have wished for a hood. She could have wished for a lot of things, topmost among them: for the task she faced to fall to anyone other than her. But that wasn't going to happen.

As she stood there, watching each vampire move forward to pour ashes into the muddy hole, her twin brother walked up to her and plunked a black cowboy hat onto her dripping-wet blond curls. She had, she'd been told, hair like Goldilocks, the face of an angel, the heart of a demon—and the power of Satan himself.

Black hat, she thought. It figured. In that spaghetti Western she'd been envisioning, she definitely would have worn a black hat. Her brother would have worn a white one. He was the good guy. The hero.

Not her.

"It's not going to be easy," he told her. "Hunting him down. Killing him."

"No shit. He's five thousand years old and more powerful than any of us."

"Not exactly what I meant, sis." James—known to her as J.W. despite his constant protests—looked her dead in the eyes. She pretended not to know what he was looking for, even though she did. Decency. Morality. Some sign that she was struggling with the ethics of the decision that had been made—that she must find and execute the ancient one who had started the vampire race.

Only days earlier, her brother had located and resurrected the first immortal, the ancient Sumerian king known as "the Flood Survivor." He was the original Noah, from a tale far older than the Biblical version. His name was Ziasudra in Sumerian, Utanapishtim in Babylonian.

A prophecy, the same prophecy that had foretold the war now raging between vampires and the humans who had finally learned of their existence, had also said that the Ancient One, the first immortal, the man from whom the entire vampire race had descended, was their only hope of survival.

Or at least, that was what they had thought it said. Turned out, their ancestor was actually the means of their destruction. Still believing the Ancient One was their salvation, J.W. had used his healing power to raise Utana from the ashes. And the man had returned to life with his mind corrupted by thousands of years spent trapped, conscious, his soul bound to his ashes.

Believing he'd been cursed by the gods for sharing his gift of immortality and inadvertently creating the vampire race, he'd set out to destroy them all. One look beaming from his eyes, and they were annihilated. He'd killed many vampires already.

Human vigilantes had killed even more.

The end of their kind, it seemed, was at hand.

Unless she could stop Utana from his self-appointed mission.

"What I meant," her brother went on, "was that killing someone who can't truly die, knowing that all you're really doing is sentencing him to spend eternity, virtually buried alive—"

"Are you trying to tweak my conscience, J.W.?" she asked, irritated. "It won't work. I don't have one. Never have. That bastard's killed hundreds of my kind. Our kind. I've got no problem taking him out before he can eliminate the rest of us. No problem whatsoever."

Someone cleared his throat, and she looked toward the open grave again. Thirteen survivors of the recent annihilation had scooped up the dust of their beloved dead and brought the remains here, to this abandoned and long-forgotten cemetery in the wilds of Maine.

Those gathered included ten vampires: Eric and Tamara, Rhiannon and Roland, Jameson and Angelica, Edge and Amber Lily, Sarafina and the newly turned Lucy. In addition, there was Sarafina's mortal mate, Willem Stone, and the mongrel twins, Brigit herself and her brother, J.W. The supposed only hope for the dark half of their family.

Rhiannon, their unofficial aunt, her long, slit-to-the-thigh gown dragging in the mud at her uncharacteristically bare feet, poured the final jar of ashes into the hole, threw the jar in after them, then tipped her head back and opened her arms to the skies. The rain poured down on the pale skin of her breasts, almost completely exposed by the plunging neckline of her bloodred gown. Her long black hair hung in wet straggles, and her eyeliner was running down her cheeks, mixed with rainwater and tears. She was not herself.

"I know you can hear me, my friends. My family." Her voice broke, but Roland moved up behind her and placed his strong hands on her bare shoulders. Then slowly, he slid them outward, following the length of her arms upward, his black cloak opening with the motion, sheltering her from the rain. He clasped her hands in his, his arms open to the skies just as hers were.

It was a beautiful image. And heartbreaking at the same time.

"I know you can hear me," Rhiannon said again. "And I trust you've found that we, too, enter paradise when we leave this life. We, too, are worthy of heaven. We have souls—souls that feel, that love, that live, a thousand times more powerfully than those of the mortals who call us soulless monsters."

She closed her eyes, drew a breath. "Be well, there in the light, my beloved ones. Be well, and fear not. For those you've left behind will survive." She opened her eyes, and they were cold and dark, more frightening than ever, ringed as they were in black. "And I swear by Isis Herself, you will be avenged."

She lowered her arms slowly, but Roland still held them, and he wrapped them around her waist, enfolding her in his cloak and in his arms as if they were one.

"It is done, my love. Come, we need to brief our little warrior before we send her off into battle."

Rhiannon turned, meeting Brigit's eyes, holding them. There was so much there, Brigit thought, staring at her mentor, the woman she most admired, most wanted to be like and whose approval she most craved. And truly, had never been without. There was love in those dark-ringed eyes. Love and grief and fear. A lot of fear.

Fear in Rhiannon's eyes was something so unusual that it shook Brigit right to the core.

J.W. tightened his hand on her shoulder. "It's going to be all right, little sister."

"Easy for you to say. Your job was to raise our living dead forebear. I'm the one who has to deal with him now that he's up and rampaging."

"Come," Eric said. "Let's return to the mansion. It's unsafe to be out in the open for long, even here."

One by one, and two by two, they filed out of the cemetery together, taking a soggy path that wound from the old graveyard along a narrow and twisting course to the towering structure that sat alone on the rocky, seaside cliff. The ocean was as restless tonight as the skies, as the vampires and their kin made their way higher. Winds buffeted them, howling and crying as if they, too, mourned the loss of so many.

Brigit walked alone. Normally she and J.W. would have been a pair, side by side, the only two of their kind and yet opposites in every way. But now he had his mate, the beautiful, brilliant Lucy, a vampire now. And Brigit wasÂ…she was alone, and facing the biggest challenge of her entire existence. A challenge she didn't want and wasn't sure she could handle.

And yet, she was all but on her way. Her bag was packed and waiting at the mansion. She'd been waiting only for the funeral rites to conclude.

Up ahead, Rhiannon, in the lead—where else?—reached the mansion's door and stood, holding it open while the others entered the crumbling ruin.

Brigit was last in line, and as she passed, Rhiannon put a hand on her forearm. "We'll have a talk before you leave," she said softly. "Wait in the library."

Great, Brigit thought. One more delay, and it was as inevitable as it would be unpleasant. The elders must want to brief her before she left on what was undoubtedly a suicide mission. Just what she needed. A lecture before dying.

    Phenomenal culmination of a legendary series!

    The wonderfulness of this book can be gleaned from one of the best literary quotes ever in my opinion… “Never, has a great king been brought so low by one so slight. My heart…you hold in your hands. The mighty heart of an immortal king is more fragile than a butterfly’s wings in your grasp. No arrow, no weapon, could pierce its stonelike shell. And yet at your touch, at your kiss, it quivers like a frightened lamb. I find there is anything I will not do if you only ask it. These things I admit to you with great trepidation. –Maggie Shayne, Twilight Fulfilled” If your heart did not just melt at that, then…

    The last in an epic journey, Twilight Fulfilled left me laughing, cheering, squealing, and ultimately crying; all with a smile.
    An action-packed thrill ride, Twilight Fulfilled leads you on a roller coaster of human (er…immortal??) emotion, dissects the way that society affects our way of thinking with propaganda and the like, thereby planting seeds of doubt where none should belong. It also proves that even in some of the direst of circumstances, love really CAN conquer all.

    Knowing the author the little that I do, I’m almost certain that last one was the big ‘message’ she was hoping to get across with this book, and she did it beautifully.

    I’m very saddened, yet in a light hearted way, to see this series come to an end. It has been a cornerstone of strength for me on many an occasion and I can pretty much guarantee that I’ll be going back to its books for repeat performances and re-reads!

    Maggie is a genius with the written word, truly did write vampires before vampires were cool, and has wrapped up Wings in the Night with a pretty blood red bow—a gift for any reader!

    LITERAL ADDICTION Paranormal Book Club gives Twilight Fulfilled 4 ½ Skulls. We definitely recommend it for ALL Maggie Shayne fans, Urban Fantasy readers, Vampire lovers, and even Paranormal Romance addicts (though this installment was more about the story and tying up the series than the sex).

    Three cheers for Maggie Shayne, Twilight Fulfilled, and the entire Wings in the Night series. You truly have been my Author Lifesaver…. :-)

    Thoroughly enjoyed

    A wonderful ending. But is it really over, door has been left open. Read the series if u love paranormal, mystery and romance, this series has it all.

    Great Read!

    Maggie Shayne's Twilight Fulfilled (Children of Twilight) is an incredible story! This was my first book from Maggie Shayne and after finishing the book I couldn't help but want more. I loved the idea of there being the Chosen those who vampires are sworn to protect. I found it extremely interesting that there was a gothic, scientific element to Shayne's story. The characters within Twilight Fulfilled are interesting to say the least. The main character Brigit Poe is a smart, strong and sexy female leading lady. The chemistry between her and Utana is undeniably irresistible.

    Shayne's story is unique, fast paced and easily draws you in from the start to finish. Although I have not read all of the previous books in this series I am eager to go back and start the series from the beginning. I would highly recommend reading the previous books because a lot of history is touched on and current/past relationships are mention but I also think Twilight Fulfilled is a fantastic book on its own. Shayne does a fantastic job re-introducing previous characters as well as new.

    Maggie Shayne did a wonderful job with her villain character Nash Gravenham-Bail. He was just so easy to hate. I despised him because he was always one foot a head of the game. I couldn't help but want Utana to just tear him to shreds. I found it extremely engaging and realistic to the story that Brigit struggled with her family about her relationship with Utana. With so much previous history it would've been silly if there was no struggle.

    Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Maggie Shayne's Twilight Fulfilled. I would highly recommend this book to vampire series lovers everywhere! This is a wonderful and exciting end to a FANTASTIC series!

    GraveTells review: a hip paranormal romance in a much beloved series

    TLDR recap: Utana, father of the vampire race, and an immortal who has been trapped inside the ashes of his body for thousands of years, is on a crusade to purge his sin against the gods by obliterating the origination of that sin... his vampire children, all of them. Brigit Poe, one of the prophecied Twins, the "evil" twin who has been trained to fight and kill with her laser-eyebeams-o-death, has been given a terrible task: kill Utana before he kills all of them. This second offering in the Children of Twilight series by Maggie Shayne starts off slow, but really takes off about halfway through, before barrelling non-stop toward a heart-breaking, explosive conclusion. A GraveTells recommended read! Thoughts: Brigit is modern, spunky, irreverent, tender, and intelligent, and she doesn't need a man to save her... usually. Utana is old-fashioned (duh, thousands of years old!), has been a king, a priest, and (considered to some) a god, can shoot crazy lasers of destruction from his own eyes, and is working some major mojo in that big sculpted (and apparently revivable) body of his. Needless to say, he doesn't think he needs a woman to save him either, but he hasn't met Brigit yet. Over the last few years, Harlequin has really been busting out of its staid, rusty old ravishing-innocents-and-bodice-rippers stereotype, and Twilight Fulfilled is an engaging contemporary, hip paranormal romance in a much beloved series. This story is told in third-person, but the characterization of the voices is so well done, it reads like first-person. It starts off as a composite cast story, with several storylines weaving in and out; that's probably what made the first half of the book feel slow for me, and the main reason for the 4.0 rating (would have otherwise been higher). We should take into account that I read Twilight Fulfilled without first reading Twilight Prophecy (the first book in the Children of Twilight series) or any of the numerous Wings in the Night books, so my observations are from the point of a true newbie to this universe. That will be helpful for readers who, like me, are starting fresh with this one, and probably annoying to readers who are long-time fans of Maggie Shayne's vampires. Something else that was both a positive and a negative for me was Utana's obvious initial trouble with the English language. His stumbling pronunciations and word misuse made for a few fun comedic moments (which, IMO, could have been played on a little more heavily), but also made it difficult for me to identify with him as a character. Ms. Shayne does a great job, though, of progressing his language skills at a believable pace; he may be highly intelligent, but he's no virtuoso and I like that - it makes him more real and he needs it. I mean, seriously, this dude is the original Noah, the father of the vampire race, an ancient Sumerian king and priest, and can wipe out entire blocks with his mega Cyclops gaze... he definitely isn't your average easily-relatable hero-next-door type!     The second Children of Twilight urban fantasy is a great finish to the hybrid twins' next generation's duology

    The species cleansing of the vampires has left the Undead nearing extinction. Based on an ancient prophecy, the only offspring of a vampire, hybrid twins James William and Bridget Poe, believe they are the only hope for salvation. J.W. liberates from a five-millennium incarceration, the immortal patriarch of the Undead Utanapishtim; the healer assumes their sire will save his children (see Twilight Prophecy).

    Instead of being the savior, Utanapishtim believes this is his chance for redemption by eradicating the abomination he created. The warrior twin Bridget confronts Utanapishtim, but is taken aback by her attraction to him. As they battle one another, she also reasons with the founding father that his return to the living is to save not destroy the race. Meanwhile Nashmum the Fed does not want an alliance that could intrude on his torcher experiments on vampires.

    The second Children of Twilight urban fantasy is a great finish to the hybrid twins' next generation's duology. The complex story line is fast-paced, but character driven by the battling lead couple and key support cast who starred in previous entries of the overarching saga. Readers will relish the climax wondering whether the attraction between Utanapishtim and Bridget will be strong enough to overcome the machinations of Nashmum and his goons, and the doubts as to right and wrong by the ancient one.

    Epic!

    First things first. This is the first book I have ever read by Maggie Shayne, and I loved it!! I now want to go back and read the whole series! Second, I am very glad that my humanities class I took last year forced me to read Gilgamesh. Knowing the information I did, I felt like I knew the whole background on the type of world that Utana had "died" in. If the only world I had known had drastically changed I would be a little on the crazy side as well. But although his complete existence has been changed, he does listen to reason. Kinda. But I loved how this book seemed to pick up from the last book. I didn't read the previous, but it seemed like it was a continuation. You are introduced to Utana as he is destroying those around him. Then you encounter Bridgit, the "bad twin" whose sole mission is to destroy Utana before he kills the rest of the vampire race. But how can she kill someone she is drawn to so passionately??? I really did like this book. I liked the writing style, characters, and the fact that I was able to read this without knowing any previous knowledge of the series.

    worth the wait

    Friday, July 22, 2011Review: Twilight Fulfilled by Maggie Shayne 4 STARS I really enjoy Maggie Shayne series twilight. I think I have read all of them. The last two are of Children of Twilight. The only child to be born of vampire was Amber lee and she had twins J.W. (James) and Brigit. Who were born with special powers. J.w. right after birth healed Brigit who was born not breathing. Brigit has power to destroy shoots a lazer from her eyes. She is known as the bad twin. James had raised up from ashes the imortale Utana who was trapped for 5000 years, thinking he was the one to save the vampires from being wiped out. Utana actually thought he was supposed to kill all of his children the vampire because he was not supposed to share his power. Utana stole James power to heal. He also killed many vampires. At same time it was made known about the vampire race and a lot of vampires houses and some humans were burned and died. Brigit knew that her power was the only one that could stop Utana and she battled him till they both could not fight any more that night. Utana was wounded but stole her power. Brigit was drawn to know more about Utana and was attracted to him. Nashmum was head of the goverment agency that has been for years killing and torchering the vampires and expermenting on them which is how Amber Lee was born. He was tricking Utana and wanted to help him kill all the vampires and the chosen people his agency had rounded up to trap the vampires. The only problem that I had with the story is Utana was supposed to be the flood survior who took his family and animals on a boat. I was a little touchy about that.Decided to not think he was Noah just someone made up from that time frame. I enjoyed the story and wonder if Maggie has finshed this series or where would it take them next book. I was given the ebook in exchange of honest review. Its release sept. 29, 2011 from Mira Books

    Amazing finale to an amazing series!!!!

    I started reading this book with a heavy heart. Knowing that it was to be the last in the series, I tried my best to pace myself and make it last as long as possible. The idea of having to say goodbye to characters I have known half my life was a little depressing. That said, I still couldn't put the book down and I found myself at the climactic ending far too soon. Brigit and J.W. (like their father Jameson) grew up before our eyes and their story, their destiny, was so fitting. I love all the books in this series and truly hope that this will not be the end.

    Briget & Utana

    I was not sure about these two characters being together at first but it worked! The love story and DPI drama in this book held my attention the entire time and I could not put it down. Now, I am looking forward to Melinda`s story.

    Highly Recommended

    I loved the Wings of the Night series, I just finished Twilight Fulfilled and I loved it ofcourse but I am heart broken that it is the series finale. All the books are awesome but best if read in order so you can get attached to the characters. Download the reading order from Maggie Shayne's website and then let her know how much you loved it so maybe she will continue.
