Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Using a two-in-one-format for his first outing as an author, Fischer (illus. of Peter Pan in Scarlet) interprets the song "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" from the perspectives of an earthling boy and his alien counterpart. After reading one version, readers can flip the book over and enjoy the other. The two stories converge at a "pop-open" center that extends the height of the spread (younger children will require assistance managing this bit of paper engineering). The parallel narratives open with each boy launching himself into space: the earth boy uses a tricycle tied to helium balloons and a skateboard ramp, while the alien blasts off in a sailing ship. When meteors pummel the two spacecraft, the boys discover each other adrift with their respective pet dogs; the center spread reveals that they have somehow managed to jerry-rig a two-man vessel from the debris. The digitally rendered pictures have the slightly smeared textures and bouncy colors of graffiti, and there are plenty of nifty details-the game-but-dubious pooches, one of which is a robot, are especially fun to follow. But the wide-eyed characterizations are an oleaginous cross between anime and kitschy Keane paintings; despite their surplus of energy, the renderings have a flat quality that makes it hard to know where to focus. All in all, a bumpy voyage. Ages 2-6. (Aug.)

PreS-Gr 1
Fischer presents his own visual interpretation of the 19th-century poem/song "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" as two wide-eyed children, one from Earth and one from another planet, plot to meet in outer space. Readers can flip the volume over to follow the specifics of each youngster's trip, and the two come face to face at the book's center in quadruple-size fold-outs. Rendered in Photoshop and graphite, the full-bleed illustrations show the Earth lad, clad in green button-flap pajamas, and his long-eared dog as they ride a balloon-lifted tricycle into the heavens. His red space-suited counterpart and a robotic pup blast off in a rocket-powered boat. The scenes are brightly colored and set against purple star-filled skies. What happens after the travelers meet is anyone's guess, but presumably the journey itself is the point of the story. Fans of Buzz Lightyear may enjoy this additional purchase, but the lullaby set would probably prefer Iza Trapani's Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star (Charlesbridge, 1994).

Kirkus Reviews
For his dos-a-dos debut volume, Fischer starts two parallel plot lines at opposite ends that meet in a big foldout scene in the middle. Using the same text for both-the full, five-verse version of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"-he follows, on the one hand, a blue-haired, space-suited alien who rockets into the starry sky aboard a jet-assisted wooden boat, and on the other, a pajama-clad human lad who does the same on a flying tricycle. Both travelers have the same grins and big, green, twinkly eyes, both experience excitingly explosive accidents that leave their respective vessels in pieces and, after meeting in mid-space, both zoom off together on a "ship" cobbled together from the parts. The language is genteel, and the faces of the two voyagers add a cutesy note, but the art's intense colors and high-energy action more than compensate. A natural for budding astronauts. Magical twist on old favorite

My two children adore this whimsical take on an old favorite. They love the characters, the bright colors, the new parts to the song- the whole thing. It is a family favorite and a wonderful book to cuddle with for a bedtime story.

    Magical Artwork!

Awesome debut book for illustrator Scott Fischer! We have been following his artwork from Magic to Dripping Fang and now this! My 2 children love the book - we read it from the child's perspective for my daughter and flip to the alien side for my son. They love the fold-out center - we read it constantly. Great artwork for a great nursery rythme. MUST HAVE!!!
