Kirkus Reviews
In Bennington's (Reunion, 2011, etc.) latest supernatural thriller, Detective Rick Burns has spent a lot of years on the Indianapolis police force, but he's never seen anything like this. When a man is found gruesomely murdered in his own home, it's just another case in a two-year streak of unsolved homicides afflicting the Indiana capital. One more case, one more headache for the troubled detective. Without any clues, leads or anything to link the cases together--except for the particularly brutal ways they were carried out--it's getting to be more than Rick can handle. Propping him up are his father--a retired cop moonlighting as the station's janitor--and Rick's plucky sister-in-law, Stella. Together, they form a pretty good support group, or so they think. What they don't realize is that they're half of Rick's problem: Rick promised his late older brother, Roger, that he wouldn't let Stella remarry a cop; that's getting to be a problem, seeing as Rick is falling in love with her. And while it's nice to have Pops nearby for help when the going gets tough, Rick's dad is just as likely to remind him that his brother was a better detective. Pops has a point; Rick is often willing to let good police work and common sense take a backseat for the sake of dramatic plot twists. Although that unprofessionalism makes it hard to strictly classify the book as a gumshoe novel, it doesn't make it any less compelling as a mystery--thanks, in particular, to the appearance (and subsequent disappearance) of a young boy. Rick spots the pale, sickly youth at the scene of the latest crime. Driven by the desperation of only having one lead, Rick decides to follow it, no matter where. Bennington's simple yet forceful style will keep readers guessing as the investigation takes Rick from the clean streets of Circle City to the darkest corners of the human heart. The truth leads Rick to places he never would have expected--and to questions he might not want answered. A brutal, emotional thriller that earns its stripes.

I absolutely fell head over heels for Detective Rick Burns. He is the nice guy, the stand-up brother, the son who tries to live up to his Dad's expectations. He tries to play by the rules and it's starting to wear on him. His life starts to unravel when a slew of unsolved murders takes over Indianapolis. The work of a serial killer, all of the victims are violent domestic abusers. A small, sickly boy shows up and seems to be the key Detective Burns needs to unlock the killer's identity. The only problem is that Burns is drawn deeper and deeper into the mystery surrounding the boy and his link to the murders themselves. Something evil is afoot and Burns seems to be losing the battle- not only of solving the murder, but also with his own personal demons. Bennington is a master storyteller of thrillers! This book hooked me in right at the start, and it was a very long night- since there was no way to put it down until it was good and finished. He kept the suspense and pace just right; enough to give the reader ample time to mull things over, but then wham! Something else would come up that would throw you in a whole new direction. I loved it! Without giving it away, the ending was superb and totally unexpected! I actually gasped out loud a time or two (earning odd looks from my spouse). The characters are very realistic and easy to empathize with as they draw you into not only the current case but also into their lives. I found myself aching for Stella and Rick and the promises made. Bennington does an exceptional job balancing the detective with the personal in this novel. I came away satisfied with the outcome of the mystery and emotionally weary from Burns' personal story. Well done! If you like work by authors such as Dean Koontz, James Patterson, or Lisa Jackson, you'll find Jeff Benninton's Twisted Vengeance right up your alley! *I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review

A twisted tale to be sure, with no idea where exactly it's going to end up. I found it full of people I might have known in my line of work. Believable characters with depth and a good read overall. Looking forward to seeing more of his work!
