Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Two rollicking infants with the surname Badd break loose from the nursery in their conveniently four-wheeled crib. Their wild rocking and bouncing propel them through town like two Katzenjammer kids on a hand-pumped railway trolley. As the errant infants burst into various shops, merchants are charmed and reward them with treats. After taking in a movie show, browsing through a few books at the bookshop and devouring enough junk food to feed a small army, the wandering babes careen into the nursery safe and sound, just in time to pass their unsuspecting mother's inspection. Though fast-paced and containing kid-pleasing repetition, Gordon's text, a slight narrative, is an odd hybrid of rhyme and prose. Sharply defined, brightly colored comic-strip art conveys the frenzy of this rambunctious albeit unexceptional journey. though ultimately unsatisfying jour ney. Ages 4-8. (Feb.)
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-- The wide-eyed Badd twins roll their ``baby bed'' out the door and play all over town in this rollicking rhyming tale. The tots visit a bakery, the movies, a hamburger shack, their father's book nook, and then roll home. The babies are welcomed, fed, and given something to share at each location. All this takes place during naptime and as they fall asleep upon returning home, their unsuspecting mother says, ``What good Badd babies.'' Although not a read-aloud for a timid-tongued teller, after a practice run or two ``Tasty Pastry Bakery Shoppe'' should come out with ease and the entire saga will delight young audiences. The background tends to fade into watercolor washes but the vibrant characters are energetic and there are plenty of details to reward the observant. Beginning readers may not want to tackle ``kerthump'' or ``Bijou'' without help, but after a few shared reads, they will likely have the tale committed to memory. --Jody McCoy, Casady School, Oklahoma City
