Overview

One unicorn dreaming under a star strewn sky. Six little chicks cuddled together quietly reading. Eight energetic dogs wildly riding a bicycle. These are just some of the wacky and wonderful creatures that readers will encounter in this exuberant exploration of numbers. Using both humor and warmth, Woodleigh Hubbard presents an extraordinary look at some very familiar actions. Her animated illustrations are filled with bold shapes and bright colors that combine to create a vibrant picture that will appeal to even the youngest reader. Children learning to count will take special pleasure in tallying the characters found in each picture and the simple text is just right for those beginning to read on their own. A striking companion to C is for Curious: An A B C of Feelings, this whimsical and innovative look at verbs and numbers will enthrall readers of every age.

In this follow-up to C Is for Curious: An ABC of Feelings , readers are introduced to numbers and actions. Each spread of this unique concept book features a designated number of creatures performing an activity, accompanied by a descriptive sentence set in large type. Hubbard's zany characters breathe life into the highly visual verbs she has chosen: floating, riding, celebrating. Although children will enjoy poring over the spiffy abstract paintings--perhaps too much so for the volume's intended audience--young counters may be thrown off track. The illustrations are frequently so cluttered with wacky touches that the central subject gets lost. This could prove confusing for those just beginning to identify numerals and associate them with quantities, as the artwork's intricacies are a poor match for the simple premise at hand. More successful as an inventive picture book, this is not the best choice for those interested in a counting title. Ages 2-6. (Oct.)

Remedy those terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days with Woodleigh Hubbard's rollicking 2 Is for Dancing. Frowns will flip into smiles at the cumulative joie de vivre of Ms. Hubbard's surrealistically droll fishing cats, celebrating turtles, bicycling dogs, et al. They're irresistible.

K-Gr 2-- A unique blend of brilliant color, abstract art, and imaginative graphic design with a duality of concept. The glorious cover suggests the celebration inside; endpapers feature the numbers 1 to 12 stylistically enlarged and patterned against a vivid blue background; the title page with its pair of party animals provides a promise of things to come; and even the copyright page is strewn with a flock of colorful birds in flight. With delightful originality, Hubbard combines each number with a verb, acted out on a double-page spread by a vibrant collection of creatures. A single unicorn dreams, a cow and bull dance, and so on up to the dozen-member balancing act. Each spread features a narrow strip of bold type at top or bottom with the rest of the spread devoted to a whimsical feast for the eye. Seven cats fishing and nine turtles celebrating are particularly outstanding. In C Is for Curious (Chronicle, 1990), the artist introduced her technique of combining concepts in a stunning picture book. She is even more successful here, providing a treat for children to discover again and again.-- Marie Orlando, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY
