Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dianne Ochiltree
Do opposites attract? They certainly do in this new title from the popular Hello, Reader! series. Grace is quiet and neat. Harriet is loud and messy. Yet these two very-different best friends find much to like in each other's opposite behavior. The girls also discover that when you sleep over at your best friend's house, you might find yourself becoming just like her-for the evening, at least. This humorous story emphasizes the importance of respecting individual differences in ourselves and our friends. The full-color illustrations are exuberant, fun loving and full of kid-appealing detail. Vocabulary and sentence length used in the text will encourage beginning readers to develop their skills effectively while enjoying their early reading experiences. Suggestions for further learning experiences, by reading specialist Francie Alexander, are included in this affordable paperback.

K-Gr 2-Two very different girls are the best of friends. One is loud, the other quiet. One's messy, the other neat. However, when each child spends the night at the other's house, she takes on the characteristics of the hostess. At one place, both girls wreak havoc with glue and glitter and water, while at the other they have prim and proper tea parties. As the boisterous narrator explains, "When you sleep at your best friend's house, you become just like her." The busy illustrations in bold colors are a bit gaudy and the title describes only half of the story, lending itself to some confusion. This is an adequate addition to beginning-reader collections, but not a necessary purchase.-Anne Knickerbocker, Cedar Brook Elementary School, Houston, TX Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
