Overview

Ever since Adam wooed Eve (or was it the other way around?), couples have been bedeviled by the thorny path of love. Why do all couples have such a difficult time becoming-and remaining-close? Now, for everyone who has ever struggled with the pain of an unhappy relationship, psychotherapist Eileen McCann answers this age-old question in a book destined to become every lover's favorite bedside companion. McCann argues that the thorny path of love is nothing less than a highly choreographed dance that steps around issues of power, distance, and intimacy. With the help of Douglas Shannon's delightful and insightful drawings, McCann charts our unwitting steps in the dance of pursuit and avoidance and shows us how to transform it into one that returns joy and meaning to our lives. The Two-Step is a wise and witty guide to affairs of the heart that delights the eye as it instructs the mind. "I find this book to be a pictorial treasure of how we act, showing the games we play, while trying to hide what we want. Out of these pictures comes a clear realization of what we are doing. With that realization, we can laugh at ourselves and be inspired to make the changes we need to make." - Virginia M. Satir

    the best relationship book ever!

My therapist recommended this book while I was suffering through a break-up. I can honestly say that the book changed my attitudes and ultimately my life in terms of how I approach creating a healthy, balanced relationship. The cartoon format is funny and wry - and makes reading the book an hour's work at most. However, in my opinion, this book holds some of the best practical wisdom about navigating intimacy and the roles we play in relationships. I have bought this book maybe 10-15 times in the past 5 years, because whenever I speak with a friend or acquaintance who is struggling in their love life, I feel compelled to pass on the book (and then have to buy another). At this point I have a surplus of 4 of them at my house so that when inevitably someone comes by with heartache, I can easily hand them The Two Step. By the way - I got my fairytale ending. After reading the book and re-approaching my broken relationship with a different perspective we have been together six incredible years - still going strong. Nothing in life is perfect all the time, but The Two Step has given both of us a new way to approach the difficult moments and relish the rest. Buy the Two Step! (but don't take all the copies as I need to keep a few in stock)

    Amazingly insightful...A classic

My wife and I bought this book almost twenty years ago because we were captivated by the illustrations and the fact that the book reinforces the belief that we are all a great deal more alike in the ways human than we are different. Now almost twenty years later, I just finished reading my copy again and found Eileen's insights still ring true to my ear. I have purchased another copy to give to my college-student son as he begins his own dance with the one he loves...
