    Another questionable cookbook

I received this as a birthday gift, and had never heard of Tyler Florence. I picked a vegetarian dinner to start with, as some friends were coming over that enjoy veg food. I'm hoping that this at random selection isn't typical of the entire book.

While the pictures are beautiful, and I liked the "photos instead of wordy descriptions" for the prep, there were major flaws in both the deep fried artichokes and summer squash risotto recipes.

Did an editor even glance at these?

If your idea of a snack is letting salt melt on your tongue, then swallowing it, follow the artichoke recipe exactly. Otherwise, cut back on the kosher salt in the batter, and use the "lemon salt" sparingly. The fritters are too light (which is a good thing) to withstand all that salt!

Regarding the roasted vegetables, I have to admit that I'd never done this before. The 350 degree suggested roasting temp is way too low, especially if your expecting them to be done in 20 minutes, as the recipe states. After one hour, I turned the temp up to 400. After some research later I found that 400-475 is the usual range for roating vegs, as the moisture quickly evaporates, shrinking the vegs and imparting a deep rich flavor.

Also never tried risotto. The time listed for this recipe is 50 minutes. There is no possible way anyone can complete this imcluding prep in less than three hours. Try picking fresh thyme leaves for example. The risotto cooking alone took an hour.

With major adjustments to timing and ingredients, the dishes would be fantastic.

As a side note,I didn't even try the beet cakes, because there are many reviews online talking about the disaster of his beet cake recipe.

WIll try other recipes before returning the book.

    Pictures, Nice Details, Good Tidbits!

If you like pictures of the food to help you with ideas and cooking, this is a great book! And if you like personal details about a chef and how they came up with their recipes, this book is for you. And if you are looking for good instruction, this book has it.

    Stirring the pot

Great recipes. I have made several recipes and have not been disappointed. Great price, however I would have preferred a hardback version.

    Lived up my high expectations

Tyler's food always looks so delicious on "Tyler's Ultimate" on the Food Network. I bought the cookbook, jumped right in and made "Dr. Tyler's Chicken Meatball and Tortellini Soup." What a comforting and delicious recipe! The preparation was easy and my family really enjoyed the results. I'm looking forward to trying out more of the menus very soon.

Stirring the pot down the disposal

I bought this book because the ratings were good. I have cooked many things from Tyler Florence and liked his recipes, so off I went to purchase this book, I couldn't wait to get home and start planning my meals. I have tried many recipes from this book and have not liked any of them. I don't know why this book has so many good ratings It was a total let down.

    more from this reviewer

    Great companion book

Goes great with Stirring the Pot by Tyler Florence. I would encourage any foodie to buy both books. Easy to follow recipes makes this a must have book.

    Just Another Cookbook

We are very active cooks and like all types of food. We felt this was more of a personal showcase for TF versus a promising look at new and interesting recipes. It makes for a decent coffee table book for a little while though...

In the end, just go online and find the recipes you want and skip this book.
