Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Colleen Majewski, MD (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This book provides a foundation for understanding and treating patients with prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, the metabolic syndrome, and the complications associated with these disorders. It updates the first edition of 2005.
Purpose: It is intended as a reference for primary care physicians, residents, and medical students on the appropriate care of patients with type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. These are important objectives given the large burden of type 2 diabetes in the world. The book is successful in describing the pathophysiology and treatment of these disorders.
Audience: It is appropriate for its intended audience. The author is a board certified internist who has been caring for patients for 35 years.
Features: The book describes the pathophysiology and treatment of these three conditions. The benefits and risks of all treatments are described, including exercise, diet, and medications. Important information is detailed on appropriate lipid and blood pressure control in these populations, with references to the literature. Areas particularly well covered are medications for type 2 diabetes and treatment of lipids and blood pressure. The addition of pictures of dermatologic lesions associated with diabetes would be helpful to readers as a quick reference.
Assessment: This would be most useful as a reference for medical students, residents, and primary care physicians. This second edition is an improvement upon the first edition, including as it does new medications and details of treatment of special populations such as pregnant patients, mental health patients, geriatric patients, AIDS patients, and dialysis patients.
